Be Careful Out There

Uh, this may sound like a funny story but please, everyone, please listen to my tale. I was returning to my dock last night and was hit with a bat. In and of itself a funny story but I did some rabies research and went to the ER this morning. Turns out, the protocol is, if you have an encounter with a bat and there is broken skin: rabies shots. I received two shots in each cheek (not the face, obviuosly) and two in the shoulder. Three more shots to go. Rabies is 100% preventable (from what the ER physician told me) but 100% fatal if not vaccinated in time. Just wanted to pass this on, especially for those who fish at night (I've read in the last 24 hrs that up to 50% of bats carry rabies). Have fun out there but be careful. And, if you have a bat encounter, go to the ER. Thanks, Jason.

We should do a race for the cure. Rabies is the silent killer.

good luck to you. a few years ago my boss's kids had to undergo rabies shots because they had ridden a pony at a fair that was rabid.

took one of the dogs to the vet the other evening. there was a poster there stating that a rabid bad was found dead on a doorstep here in the South Hills of Pgh. They figure one of the homeowners cats killed it and brought it home. both cats now have to be quarantined for 90 days.

Actually not so silent. When humans die of it it can get pretty loud. Had some missionary friends in C.A.R. who shared some pretty ugly human rabies death stories with me.  If there is no vaccine they just tie you to a pole so that you don't hurt anyone when you go mad.

Two types of rabies, mad rabies and dumb. Coon usually get the mad type ie "mad coon." Bats usually get the dumb type and will even forget how to fly. So, someone or someone's pet walks up to a "dead" bat and tries to pick it up and gets bitten.

I got the vaccine before the bite when I got certified to do nuisance animal control in New York State.
