fished for a few hours this morning...
    I was swinging maraboo's... (sp)
had one on for a minute or so and got the fly back...
first time I have ever hooked up using a fly rod...
The god da%#@#$ reel is about useless... Takes way too long to get line in
    I miss my spinning gear...
But have decided to commit to the fly stick till I
I get and land a salmon and a steelie

Nice! I f you are swinging remember to hold some slack line and drop it to the fish on the take.
That gives it a chance to turn with the fly instead of just pulling it straight back out of their mouth. Then keeping the rod low sweep it downstream toward the bank pulling it into the hinge.

thats is perfect advice from wader boy... i'll second that...i i commonly leave around 10 feet of slack in the chamber on average... also, why are you annoyed by retrieval rate? one pointer, when it is necessary to retrieve line faster than you can reel, just do simple strips while pinching the line with your rod hand... just carefully let the slack down stream from you and you can either reel it up when the fish is stabilized or let him take it back out when he turns to run again...

Or get a large arbor reel if you are not using one.

    Thanks,
Most of it is tongue in cheek... I have been fishing eggs and spinning gear for years...
A good friend gave me a fly stick, reel and a box of flies.
He is coming up for 3 weeks in October and I have to get the hang of this...
I have been practicing/learning all summer, lots of bass and pickerel
It's very different with the fly rod, I felt total newbe with the salmon today, which can be motivation in and of itself.
I really like the idea of the slack line in hand, thanks for he advise

Just don't wrap that slack around your ankle or hand. If you get a hot fish you'll pay dearly.

Greaselining below the Altmar bridge before it became the unemployment pool(used to be called either the bubbles or the monkey water) for steelhead.
Giant freakin swirl, rod bent to the butt and then either just gone or a 22 like crack in the days before before I could force myself to drop the loop.
Every fiber in your being says hit him HIT HIM but ya got ta lets um turn and sweep to conect solid most of the time.
I'm a slow learner but a learner none the less.

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE FEEL OF THAT TAKE ON THE SWING OF A FLY LINE....the big swirl...the initial take... the release of line... then the hook-up when the fish has that hook slam into the side of it's jaw...then the leap....all within seconds....

aahhh....get ready boys...hopefully some early chrome in a few weeks....especially if the water temps drop...
