Applying For a Pa Elk Tag

When appling for an elk tag the hunter has 4 choices.

code 530 Anterlered Elk Aplication
531 Anterless Elk Aplication
532 Either Sex Elk Aplication
533 Elk Preference Point Only

When appling for 533 Elk preference point only is the hunter only buying a point or his his name still in for the drawing ? Can a hunter purchase a point only aplication 4 years in a row then the following year apply for an Elk aplication with 5 times the chance of being drawn ?

    OA,
Thats the way I read it.
I think thats for those who are drawn for a Bull tag, if my memory serves me right they are not allowed to get another tag for 5 yrs.

Dad has been putting in since day 1. Still probably won't happen. Speakin' of elk, we leave in 14 days for Colorado. Mountains are gonna whoop my arse.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

You only feel like you are going to die for the first 10 or so days.

    Good Luck and be safe.

You are only buying a point and are not entered in the drawing.  And yes, if you have purchased 4 points then apply, your name will be in there 5 times.

Na.. 2 days max. Diamox to the rescue. I get a little goofy starting at about 10,000 feet but we're down yonder from that. Just a little.

Yes it's a crapshoot. What part of CO are you hunting. Ive been helping a buddy get ready for his first trip to Gunnison to hunt the second rifle season. He has never been out there before. I've been making suggestions but he won't listen. Base camp located at 9,000. He's got a long hunt ahead of him if he dosent get in shape.

Guys I hunt with are headed to Meeker for the second season.  The ones idea of a hard hunt is 100 yards off of the quad.  He actually shot a good bull last down over the mountain.  The other guys in camp were the ones that had to go down into the hole and pack the bull out as the guy that shot is in horrible shape.

I hunted Colorado elk a few years ago with some wealthy guys.  They take GPS coordinates of the elk and then go hire someone to carve it up and pack it out.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The closer we adhere to the Holy Bible and the US Constitution (as it was written) the closer we get to the model that made America great. The great American experiment worked, human nature just got in the way.

Hunting Emporium will get you in shape for a western hunt. Our family has a place there and I remember those long hikes up out of Clear Creek. Gota agree things are quite different nowadays. Less active hunters and lack of deer have taken it's toll on those more mountainous places. Most now like to sit out back near a food plot and wait for Bambi. I have done self guided hunts but for some a guided hunt is pure heaven. A guide pretty much does everything but pull the trigger. On some of the self guided hunts the hunter has the option of using the outfitter to retrieve the animal. Got to be worth it at times especially if one has health problems.

Tim Kempfe is the outfitter out of Almont Co. Any one ever use him before ?

We are hunting Durango this year.. very close to the four corners.  Base is at 9,200.  Body and mind is ready; lungs won't be until we acclimate.  We are heading out a couple days early.  Dad found a wallow on google earth in the middle of nowhere at 12,000 feet and came up with the bright idea that we're going to it our first full day out.  I'll let him go first.

Sounds great. Does google earth have recent satellite imagery ? I thought it was only updated every so often may be months apart. A wollow would be great though. Warm temps out there now but you know that can change. Good luck have fun and keep us posted.

pack some choclate sp. bars and m+ms when your hiking, when you start to fell quizzy or light headed snack on them, it worked for my friends and I when I was in colorado a couple of times, hiking from 8 to 12000 ft can get to you the first couple of days. Good luck. John

Thanks John. I tried a few of the pure protein bars. Everyone was talking up the peanut butter chocolate chip (which is my favorite combo btw...). It made me sick.. almost puked.
