Drake would you vote the mayor out of town if he didn't make the trains not blow their whistles for no reason all night if you weren't making a profit off the railroad being there? If you were the mayor would you listen to the voting public and put up no train whistle signs, unless like now in politics the railroad was paying you off under the table? ,

Wader - using your logic, I could stretch it to think that the litterbugs are paying off the mayors along the river so they won't place/maintain garbage cans or dumpsters along the river for a few months. I can give a few more examples that won't cost squat in relation to the tax revenues collected. Like I said b4 - IMO there are some common sense parts of doin business that do not exist up there.

I'm talking about private landowners most of which get no return from the invasion of fishermen. Why wouldn't they want to maintain the serenity of there neighborhood. If the fishermen had shown them some respect we wouldn't, other than DSR, be where we are with the access problem we have in town now. As for the paying off the mayor it was the only reasonable4 explanation someone who could-would be voted out of office would not listen to voters. Never meant anyone in pooltown was ever paid off. That is why the signs did and still are going up.

your missing my point - it doesn't help much when the town officials/business owners did nothing more than collect/gouge money and put up "no" signs (too little, too late) they (and the non-player local residents) reap what was sowed.

Guys, I see both good argument here.. I agree with both.. Now this has nothing to do with fishing but just small town talk.. lets say I live my entire life in this little hole in the wall town out in the sticks.. I live my life like I want to and grew up living that way.. Ya know , mow the lawn when I feel like (or not) run the atv and tear up my yard, chase the loose farm animals back to the barn, late night parties , swim naked in my pool, shoot the busch cans with the 12 gauge.. All that stuff that we always did.. So along comes the big housing boom.. Folks from NYC/ and other states are buying either deceased peoples homes or offering locals ridiculous sums of money for their property.. I mean a $100,000 or less house selling for $300,000 and more.. Well now these new home owners want what they feel is a country life.. They don't necessarily agree with my life long style.. So what they do is sit in every town board meeting and raise their arms up to have zoning laws (hell I don't need no stinkin permit) and people knocking on the door because my grass is too high or my stove is smoking too much.. Now why does this happen ? Because they have nothing but time & $$$$.. Surly I respect others rights but for goodness sakes this is still ( I hope) the free world.. Have no clue what I just typed about other then a Rant.. lol...

Like Wader said---fishermen contribute very little to MOST locals(aside from gas/food choices)---the town does pretty well with the campers from Memorial-Labor ;)

Tuna if there were more peoplethat had lived there their whole lives than there are new people who moved to the country so they could change country to their specs would the long timers put up with a mayor-town council that sided with the minority instead of the majority long time residents. Drake I get your point that the village gov did a crappy job. That doesn't change the fact that had the fishermen acted with respect for the people that lived there rather than like ugly Americans (what the fick do I care I'm not gonna be here again) much of this problem never would have arisen. Both sides reap what was sown but the poor homeowners did nothing to deserve what happened. They just wanted to live there lives as they always had.

Wader- I'm a retired L/E who got into politics later in life- have been elected 3 times now to local office-they are now looking to me to become our Majority leader in a town of over 50,000 pop. with a ceremonial Mayor -strong Council Govt. Not braggin just to point out I have some limited experience with taxation revenue and its effect on local conditions. Our gross budget is well over $ 200.000,000 plus grants. Business is the cornerstone of a local Govt's expendable income cause it generally costs the Govt little to nothing to support said business. The greatest cost to a local Govt is Education and residential development.- thats why I keep bringing it up in my statements. Business does not have kids and generally fends for itself with maintainence issues. Its cost to a City is minimal. EX- you pay gross of 4,000 annual property taxes and generally about 60% is for school--$2,4,00. You got 3 kids at a general average cost per pupil of around $10,000- Govt looses on you.- not to mention all the other services your taxes pay for. They just lost even bigger. In other words you contribute nothing to the PD, Highway and other Depts as long as your kids are there and then for years after till =your taxation reaches the fulcrum point. Then your old and sell to somebody else with kids. Town Govts usually HATE housing developments cause they mean higher municipal costs with lower municipal income- even after the tax income. They LOVE business increases cause they bear little or no municipal cost and actually do produce expendable income. Business also pays school tax even though they have no kids and even though most business have far more value than your home- therefore imagine what your school tax would be if only the residential folks were actually paying the whole bill. A decent point is that the local school tax is usually only bout half the REAl cost since the State kicks in so many education dollars too. One would easily imagine that 'the strip' from Pulaski to the new Lumber Yard brings in just about as many dollars as most all the rest of the interior Town. New buildings, large buildings of all commercial description are there- most of which would fold without the dollars brought in by the Fishing Industry the SR provides. But you say' oh local folks are there year round at many of those businesses" I agree- however how much Annual profit do they make and how much of that is during Shark season? Without the huge input of resources Fishing brings most would fold quickly as their annual profit margin would decrease dramatically. There may be one or two store/gas stations left for example instead of the several now there. How many lost jobs where folks say they arent making thier lifestyle based on Fishing? How many of those folks have both spouces working and the loss of one income means moving out cause they cant afford their home or even to live where there are no readily available jobs any longer? A general population decrease of even high single digit proportions usually indicates a community is in dire straights fiscally and may not survive without HUGE tax increases at a time they can least 'afford' to have to make such a move-We are seeing this happen now across the country where business has failed for a variety of reasons an it aint pretty. Could go on for a lot longer but thats enough to make the point. BTW Wader- please refrain with the ' under the table' stuff thats what folks resort to when their arguments are going nowhere- Trains have to blow their horns at and before all crossings by law nationwide - There are lots of little crossings in the area and sound carries at night.

Yes I know you are in gov. That is why I asked you the question how much would the average households tax bill rise? There is a mathmatical principle that the value must be worth more than the odds something might happen before you can make an educated decision. Without knowing what the tax increase would be you can not determine if it is or is not worth giving up a homeowners rights to some peace and quiet or let a bunch of uncaring rude visitors take over there village for the expected tax savings. Yes trains by law must blow whistles at crossings. Did I somewhere say that was the whistle blowing I was writing of? Perhaps the train blew its whistle hoping to attract more costomers. The pay off as I said was the only logical reason I could see that a public servent would not listen to the majority of his voters. Never said it happened. What is the value of the gain verus the odds of the outcome.

my opinion on the area is: it is what it is; people get what is given and thats it... ps... i think the community has much potential and is more or less sustainable... like a local just told me when i was up in june... "people up here are willing to spend there money on there house or property; not the bahamas or anything like that"...

Wader- easy task = total amount of services to the Community by govt divided by the mill rate of the asesed value of gross taxable assets of that community. When the taxable assests diminish the gross of services does not. The dif is the tax increase- plus cost increases of those services. Gas ,parts, labor, etc-- Probably the worst example- or best depending how ya look at it -is Buffalo NY.== Huge population loss in the past decade or two along with the corresponding great loss of business made the City very affordable to many without resources leading to huge cost increases in Education and municipal services at a time of huge diminishing tax revenue. Ergo much higher taxation leading to more egress by those able to afford to leave. Result- they cant give away houses over there. Same thing in Florida almost statewide- Know lotsa aging Snow Birds who are now trying to live in one state cause the trip and work of 2 homes is too much for them-they cant sell their properties at any price anymore. Thats not all the present economy either- been coming for a long time now. Anyplace today with a built in revenue surce by nonresidents who dont stay and utilize municipal assets is unique and VERY lucky. Clearly the gross cost is only acceptable if you feel the place you are is that which you wish to remain for any personal reasons. Personally I like the Pulaski Altmar area very very much and chose it. NOT tryin ta argue about this stuff - its just the way it is. Dont think folks haveta run around kissin rude snagging litterbugs either just cause they spend a few bucks- Do think some folks should look at the whole picture though, This diminished access thing has been building for a long time now- The SR is simply not anywhere as available as it was well over 30 yrs ago when I first went there in my 30s. All things change with time but ---- Hey -its still good enough for me to have bought up there a few years ago as a second place instead of someplace like Florida or the Carolinas ( they were on my short list)- just making some points that need to be made.

Just checked the calandar- Wife worked the 4th. Was up to the Sr Bass and Chub fishing and shootin the .22 for a few days with my oldest grandson. He's too young for the beer though. Didnt see any drift boats or other fishermen but the tubers messed up a decent hole. BTW- Wader-Yes, my place was already there when I bought it. A 3 bedroom 2 bath old trailor with a large mud room attached and 2 decent large sheds on 10 acres. Has bout 1100 sq ft of living space.. Had been empty and for sale quite a while- probably due to condition. Spent the first winter doing an inside rehab and the following Spring, Summer and most of Fall painting, pressure washing, metal roofing and taking load after load of yard junk to the Transfer station and reestablishing a decent lawn of about an acre or more complete with tons of trimming big stuff and redoing one of the sheds. Go up every 2 weeks Spring Summer and Fall-many many times just to keep trimming and mowing so the place doesn't go back to lookin like it did when I got it and the neighbors dont haveta live near a grown over mess. Respect - yea I got it- for the Town and the residents and my neighbors. I dont like the slob fishermen any more than anyone else does. Fortunatey a few of them don't represent the majority- certainly not anyone on this board. "see you at the party later" ( quote from Arnold the Sperminator in that Mars movie he did)

While your equation may be simple without real numbers the bottom line---is it worth my hassle because of the taxes I save because of it----can't reasonably be determined. Would it be worth it to only allow childless barren couples buy houses since they will be paying school tax but not using the system? Only allow mcmansions to be built since they would because of area and number of electric outlets pay higher taxes? My question, obviously badly written, was not was your house already there but rather was the camp you wrote about. If you by a house at the end of a JFK runway complaining about the noise later is not an option. As for Buffalo, yes it is a depressed area with little industry left for residents to work in. Definately a hard sell but you also have to factor in that the gubmint there for years let the plants there get away with enviromental murder. Yards so covered by white ash inches deep in July that you could take the family Xmass pics. Love canal where those same companies sold property with shallow buried 50 gallon drums of poison for the gov to make playgrounds on. Fish still swimming in the big lake that even if they tasted good you shouldn't for health reasons eat. I have never for a second doubted that you, or really any of the regulars here, have great respect for the residents and community. Just feel that complaining about the no no signs is unjustified since it was those rude slob fishermen that brought the problem and while I dislike it as much as you I woun't blame the local homeowners for wanting to maintain some degree of peace, quiet and control over their neiborhoods. Now on to the difference in atitude and access in Altmar verus Pulaski. Pulaski was a full on village when the fishery came. No public lands along the river to carve out parking lots like sportsmen (north and south),Tressle(north and south)Ellis cove, Pineville, the launch in Altmar and the north and south lots below the bridge. Major difference between that and people parking in front of your house starting a zerodarkthirty, some that couldn;t care less about making noise and leaving their Micky D bags in your yard. Also a higher percentage, because of the smaller population, of people living IN Altmar make a direct profit from the fishery. OW now my typing finger is sore. PS hoping to a least stop by and sayin hi during DB daze!
