The only thing I see was another link to the PGC press release about licenses going on sale and a comment column where just 3 guys had 15 comments to each other from June 26th to July 5th.. deer hunter had 2 the other 13 were between sandman and tom ...

    Am I missing something ????

Just the left half of your brain.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The closer we adhere to the Holy Bible and the US Constitution (as it was written) the closer we get to the model that made America great. The great American experiment worked, human nature just got in the way.

My preferred view of antlerless deer is in the crosshairs.

    Dardys,
Since the other thread is closed, wanted to pick up here where that one left off. Not sure why it got locked other than the standard trout bashing...

"From the discussion on this board, a vast majority of 2B, or whatever WMU it is, is unhuntable by anything other than archery and that hunting takes place in small woodlots that indeed are located between someone's pool and swing set. Is that not accurate?"

This perception is not accurate. There is plenty of slug gun hunting that happens in 2B (and rifle in the counties that allow it) once rifle season opens up. Most of the "wooded land" that is left is large, steep, valleys that make development difficult. Additionally, most of the rivers are borderd by steep, wooded, huntable hillsides. There is plenty of land to hunt on, even for firearm only hunters, if they would just get out and ask.

This area does get saturated with archery hunting due to the high population and the ease of "running out back" after work to get an evening sit in.

Thank you for the information.  I stand corrected.

Why does it seem so difficult then for the PGC to get the harvest they want?

Posted property and large tracts (in relation to the rest of the huntable land) of county, city and twp. parks where no firearms hunting is allowed. And on a select few of those, you can only archery hunt but you have to be a member of WMA to hunt them and follow all their rules as they have sole access to hunt these places.

E&G pretty much summed up my thoughts about the misconceptions of 2B.  Many of the areas I hunt in 2B would be considered fairly rural by most and much of it consists of medium sized farms (~100-200acres)

IMO the deer problem is primarily focused around the city of Pittsburgh and adjacent municipalities, not so much in the outer edges of 2B.

The PGC has essentially exhausted all of their available means to control the population in the problem areas by implementing a 5 month long doe season combined with "unlimited" tags.  The problems ensue in many neighborhoods primarily due to a severe lack of access and also in some cases public opposition to hunting in highly developed neighborhoods.  Again this is just my opinion, but for many of the problem municipalities, I do not believe traditional hunting will ever be able to effectively control the deer population.

Again the WMU for 2B is much too large. Areas that are open for hunting that once had a decent doe population now have very few due to the unlimited # of tags. I know more and more to post no doe hunting or just no hunting at all. Many property owners are tired of the slaughter.

    question for the PGH guys..

I used to live in Penn Hills... and there was alot of land I could hunt adjoining/surrounding the Oakmont Country club .. It was extremely hilly though as mentioned .. but it did hold deer..

Is any of that still huntable ????

    Thanks

The high deer populated areas of 2B can not be hunted with shotgun slugs, only bow.....and many areas are off limits to bow because of the safety zone.

The outer areas of 2B has less of a deer herd problem for the most part because shotgun slug is allowed and not restricted as the inner areas of 2B.

The only deer problem in 2B is in the metro areas.

I'm not quite understanding your question?

What I'm saying is shotgun slug is allowed for the most part in the outer areas of 2B and not allowed in the metro area of Pittsburgh.  However some suburb townships/boros close to the metro areas do allow shotgun slug hunting.

A township, borough, city or municipality cannot restrict hunting on land they do not own.  Ordinances against the discharge of firearms do not apply to hunting.

Ridgehunter, RIFLES are permitted in the non-Allegheny Co. portions of 2B, not just slug guns.  Parts of Butler, Westmoreland, Beaver and Washington Counties.  There was discussion by the PGC a year or two ago to make ALL of 2B slugs only, but it did not pass.

Really agree with OA that 2B is too large and mismanaged.  I hunt in the Butler Co. portion of 2B very frequently. Half of that portion in Butler County is no more suburban/urban than most of the rest of Butler County that lies in 2D or 1A.  Half is Cranberry Twp area and SHOULD be in 2B.

In the immediate area of a couple square miles that I hunt (not all of 2B or even the entire Butler Co. portion of 2B) the deer herd has been decimated in the past 4 or 5 years.  Drive 4 miles north onto another property I hunt in 2D, and the deer herd is healthy - back from the brink of decimation thanks to the split seasons the past couple of years in 2D, but not as high as it was 10 years ago.

You are correct.  However, they can restrict the use of firearms on land that a township, borough or city owns.  For the most part, townships and boros do not restrict shotgun on their property.

You will have a difficult time finding a place to slug hunt in the pittsburgh metro area that is city property.  In fact, I know of none.

I don't know of any either that the city owns and allows hunting.  I used to have  a killer spot within the city that was large enough and privately owned to slug hunt.  Lost access quite a few years ago.

Some of those deer in Allegheny are like pets. I used to feed a buck a banana every day on County property. Then the deer police came in and wiped them out as per public safety. Probably just as well as many get hit on the highway when they become dumb and move looking for love.
