Yough River-Whitsett

Anyone know if there is a boat ramp there? Is the water deep enough to handle a 17' bass boat? Any additional information on the area would be a appreciated.

Not a good idea unless you have a jet boat. But yes there is a launch there. Pretty skinny water around those parts.

I have waded downstream from the launch at cedar creek with no problems at all

I too have never had any problems with mud. There was some talk about Cedar Creek wading on here before. I had been told to get out of the water by the police,, 10+ years ago. After that, I usually took a bike with me and biked to areas where the channel was on the bike path side, so no real need to wade. After about a 1/2 mile away from the park, I always see people wading. Again, not sure if it is legal.

If just fishing, I'd probably go elsewhere. If you are picnicing with the family and fishing, then it is nice there. A lot nicer with a boat, to get you to the other side.

The Yough has pretty good amount of access points. Find roads on a map that run paralell or cross. I like the bike method, just make sure you take a lock. Just like anywhere, there are jerks that think it's ok to walk off with stuff that isn't theirs.

I love the Yough at this time of the year. Even if you don't catch anything, you can take a dip and usually get to see a few bikinis float past!

thanks for the info. i just get a little nervous trying to wade in new places on a bigger river like the yough, so I want to make sure i'm not getting myself in some 15 foot hole or trying to fish a too quick stretch of water. last year i tried fishing a spot on the conemaugh and ended up thigh deep in mud, alone. that wasnt so fun.

and yes, the amount of easy access/parking on the yough is notable. its really silly that i never fish it consider i pretty much wade exclusively.

As far as the thread.  I thought I was going to die a couple yrs. ago at Smithton.  Mid-spring, wearing neoprenes, wading below the Smithton Bridge.  I was 1/3 of the way offshiore and heading down to the bend of the river.  Started towards shore to exit the river at the bend and hit mud.  The neoprenes sucked to my legs like a constricor snake and I was slowly sinking.  Not sure how I summoned the strength to forge towards shore, but I know I was in mud for 30 feet.  I guess the sheer fear kept me going.  I couldn't go backwards because the force of the current was hitting me in the back.  I honestly thought I was a goner.  One of the scariest moments I've ever experienced.

Layton to Smithton is a nice float trip. Dawson to Smithton even better. how did you do?

Carry in under the bridge. Have you ever seen the water trail maps on the Pa fish commission site? they're pretty nice to have with you.
