Branching Out from the Rivers

Hey Guys,
This Is my second year living here in Pittsburgh and I have been fishing the rivers since. I enjoy the Bass Fishing out of the Allegheny the Most out of all three but I am looking to branch out a little. I havent fished any other parts of the area except the Three Rivers in the Downtown area and I was wondering about Raccoon Lake. How is the bass fishing over there? Is it a nice place to Camp? Thanks in advance, Jesse

do you have a boat? the upper end of raccoon can produce some bass. have caught some in the past but its hit or miss. never caught very many but nice size 19" & 20". spinnerbaits & buzzbaits. also has a lot of crappies and the trout fishing is good till about july. it can get a little hectic on weekends. ive never camped there but from what i hear its pretty nice.

There are a ton of oppertunities in the area. The downtown area of the 3 rivers, unless fishing from a boat, isn't the best, but not bad. There seems to be more access on the rivers, the further away from town. Do a search for "Lock 2",3,4, ect or any creek name that is a tributary to the river "Deer Creek, Montour Run, Turd Hollow, ect.". The access by most of these are pretty good, as well as the fishing at cetain times of the year. Same deal with just about any water in the area. Check out a map, and get the name of the water, and do a search on this site of that water.

Raccoon, IMO is one of the smaller "trout lakes" of the area. Definitely some other species and imagine some plump ones from feeding on small trout. Being a state park, it is kept pretty clean, and mostly free of rif raf. Play grounds, beach area and picinic areas close by, make it a good family lake. I'm sure if you spend your time figuring it out a bit, it can be a great fishing lake too. As can be said with almost all of the local waters.

There are some waters in the area, the 3 rivers and some of their tribs especially, that can get pretty nasty after a hard rain, so beware of this. If you see or smell a sewage line or see a sign saying CSO (Combined Sewage Overflow), do not wet wade in the area. And wait 2-3 days after a good rain to fish near it, or you will catch some very nasty things...

Come on pork. Thats the best time for carp and channel cats. nothing like a good smelling sewer to fish around. Lol. I remember fishing highland park (Sharpsburg Side) with my brother years ago and the sewer in the corner was over flowing. Water was high and we were waded out beyond overflow. On way in when done I tripped over someones rock rod prop that was submerged. Well ended up in sewer sludge up to my chest. My brother made me ride home in the trunk. Thank god I grew up across the river and did not have to ride very far. Lol

Ah yes, the brown trout spawn.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The closer we adhere to the Holy Bible and the US Constitution (as it was written) the closer we get to the model that made America great. The great American experiment worked, human nature just got in the way.

Smalliemaster, I really wish that I read your post, prior to lunch... I've seen guys stuck out beyond the brown trout slick. I also had a few times that I fished/waded out too soon after a rain, prior to it washing some of the paper trails...
