Water temp question

Here is a pic of the temp gauge on the river.
Some days there is almost a 10 degree temp spike and/or drop.
Any clues how this affects the fishing ??
Should you target the falling temp and the bottom out or the rising temp ????

Trial and error may answer your question best bing. I used to night fish the delaware river in the mid to late summer months and it was near midnight when the big boys would come out to play on big sub surface patterns but keep in mind some nights the surface would be on fire with sipping trout right after dusk. Everyday and every river is different though...good luck

From my experience and knowledge I would say fish it on the fall and at the bottom if you are targeting trout. The trout should become more active due to the lower amount of stress on the fish. Of course this only matters if the colder water is more oxygenated which I believe it is. Just my 2 cents. If you are targeting another species it may very well be different.

    Gary,
The water below the dam is well oxygenated, so even though the temps do exceed 70F, the fish wouldn't be in danger, if that's your concern.
    +75F, trout activity level changes.
Sudden changes in temp over 7F causes
Even though there is big swings in water temp below the dam, there done over enough time that the fish aren't in danger.

As far as fishing goes, I found that when they screw with the discharge (cfs) and temps, fishing suffers. The fish can never get acclimated to the changes.
I find the fishing better when the Gage Height and Discharge Graphs are closer to flat lined.
Currently (7/23 - 7/30), they are all over the place.
