Perch Rods

I have reserved a date on the perch head boat. Should I rent a rod or bring my own ?  I have the basic medium ugly stick spinning rod and reel.  I have heard that a braided line is necessary.  Is this true ?  Wasn't sure whether to rent or bring my own.  Thanks !

    Ugly stick is OK
Braided line lets you feel every little nibble-I prefer PowerPro.
Also bring double or triple crappie type rigs, 3/4 to 1oz sinkers and size 4-8 hooks/I like circle hooks for perch

Ugly stick is the rod of choice on my boat, get the braid or fireline you'll like it for other fishing too... I think they sell sabiki rigs on there too...

Braid is a MUST. Rod/Reel doest really matter....I like a faster action just so I can feel the bite better, but any will do IMO.

On my trip on the EJ, I regretted NOT renting their rods. Lets face it SOME days you could catch perch on a snoopy pole, but whats the first thing that happens when it gets slow?? the fish all bite lightly, and thats when the right tackle can make ALL of a difference.

I saw that it was only $3 on both Edward and O Danny O (tiny tims) just wasn't sure if they use the braid line or I need to rig my personal rod up with it.  Do they have that on their reels ?

yeah they sell the sabiki rigs for like 2 dollars a piece. it comes with 3 hooks and some lead. they worked well for me. they are pretty much crappie rigs with one more hook. but i have no problem paying and tipping the crew. theyre great

Sabiki rigs and crappie rigs are very different, unless you're using Sabiki rigs for crappie...

    Sabiki Rig:

    Crappie Rig:

Sabiki's come with 6 hooks, you have to cut them in half to be legal. Some use a spreader rig as well which resembles a coat hanger...

They both catch perch, but the Sabiki will out produce the crappie rig IMO. I used to use crappie rigs, but now have all of my perch rods rigged with Sabiki's. They will catch fish without any bait on them many times. I've learned two important lessons perch fishing, fireline and Sabiki rigs...

like the others have said just about anything will work, i like a nice lite action rod but the rod isnt that important if your using braid...i use power pro for every kind of fishing i do now i absolutely love it!

A few years ago I had a hard time finding sabiki rigs-now they are getting more popular.
They come in various sizes and patterns.
Try #6 hook with silver/pink or white wings
Glow in the dark is also a good choice

If you buy them online be sure to check hook size
Japanese sizes go the opposite way #10 or 12 might be what we think of as #6

I use powerpro on most of my rods

Has anyone done a jigging for walleye on one of the perch boats? Making my first trip next week and thought it I might try jigging Erie Dearies with crawlers in hopes of scaring up a walleye.

I've heard of a few stray walleye being caught earlier in the year.  Most likely only thing you'll scare up is a lot tangled lines and unhappy fishermen.

If you can tie a loop in a leader, you can make your own rigs easy enough.

Crappie rigs have a wire that holds the snells away from the line to reduce tangles

Bring 2 poles. You never know when you might need a back-up. Size 6 bait holder hooks with leaders, and I prefer a crappie rig with charteause beads instead of red.

been using the same 2 light action ugly sticks for 5 years now on the boat.  they take a beating when you or the people with you get careless. Took one to GM to get an eyelet repaired, they gave me a new rod.

I've always used 6lb mono with 2-3 #6 bait hooks and I've done just as good or better than those with the fancy set ups.

Do yourself a favor and spool up some fireline or braid. I was like you before I tried it. Had guys tell me for a couple of years and I was stubborn, figured it couldn't make that much difference. Well, I was wrong... just don't tell my wife... she thinks I'm perfect...

my opinion is that when using the crappie rigs or just hooks with leaders there is alot of room for the fish to bite with no tug on the main line because of the longer leader. if the leader is like 6" the perch can bite your minnow and move around about six inches in eighter direction with out tugging on the main line resulting in not feeling the bite as good. the sabiki has much shorter leaders on the hooks which leaves the perch not as much room to move around before feeling it in the main line. just my thought.

I took several trips on the EJ last summer.. first time fishing Lake Erie .. I bought the sabiki rigs as soon as I was on board and was ready to fish at the first stop ... as mentioned you will have to cut them since those ones come with 6 hooks, but someone nearby will help you I am sure if you have questions.. all great folks on board on all my trips...

I will have to agree with the above guys.. feeling the bite at 50 feet is the key to catching Erie Perch.. they sure don't bite like smallmouths or trout that I was use to

it took me two trips to figure out the right line, rod action, feel, etc ==

then I did fine.... GOOD LUCK and have fun !!!
