Come on Dano it is not like you to criticize the gear another chooses to fish with.  We need to go out and I will let you use my centerpin set up.  That way you can feel the power of the darkside....

CHUMMING STEELHEAD IS AS OLD AS THE HILLS. THE GUY DIDN'T SLIT OPEN BELLIES TO GET SKEIN FOR CHUM. YOU CHUM WITH LOOSE SALMON EGGS AVAILABLE IN ABUNDANCE AT LAKE ONTARIO TRIBS AND CLEANING STATIONS. IT DEFINETLY TURNS FISH ON. YOU WON'T FIND ONE CENTERPINNER FROM CANADA WHO DOESN'T HAVE A POCKETFULL OF CHUM. WHEN THE FISH TURN OFF IN A RUN, THROWING A HANDFULL OF LOOSE EGGS USUALLY RESULTS IN A HIT ON YOUR NEXT DRIFT.

Actually Dano the centerpin is still in the closet.  I have been waiting for some higher water to pull it out.  The fly rod has been carrying the load since late September.

I watched guys in N.Y,. slay em on 'pinners and skein. The big advantage I see is the drag free drift. I think scenting my fly helps cover up human scent, too.I was fishing the "tree hole" on lower Elk last week and the only guy in the hole catching them was using a single egg with 2 maggots on it.

Dano,

NY is considering a position limit on eggs not a ban on chumming from my understanding.  I'm not sure of the wording by it may be only trout eggs too.  Didn't even know this was being proposed until a friend told me about it a few days ago.  It shouldn't effect me as I don't carry much when I fish.

I'm thinking we should consider a ban of fly fishing.  Not only do fly fishers stand in the middle of the best water, they stomp potential redds in spawning tribs, they are the cause for much carnage in the pursuit of natural materials and the synthetic materials are almost all oil based.  The use of these oil based materials supports the oil dependent economy we have today and it increases global warming and harms.  Not to mention all of the trees harmed by errant back-casts.

Yes...  As I see it we should be banning fly fishing.  Man, I'm loosing on all fronts here but If I have to die to kill my enemy, I'm OK with that.

Scott,
LOL, you'll be prying that flyrod out of my cold dead hands.

As for NY DEC proposed regulations. From Dunkirk, NY site:

Jim Markham, senior aquatic biologist at the Lake Erie Fisheries Unit, reminds trout anglers of two regulation changes proposed to start Oct. 1, 2008.
"One would ban the chumming of trout eggs, a practice that has led to illegal killing of trout (excess creel numbers) and discarding of carcasses. The second proposal would ban the sale of trout eggs statewide and limit possession to one quart per angler".

That looks to leave salmon eggs as an option but it doesn't effect me anyway.  I can't win in this argument  I loose a pin or a fly rod...  Maybe we should propose a ban on smokin on the tribs, what do you think?

By the way would you email me your postal address too.

Thanks

Well to make the fishing more fair, maybe I should use my baitcasting set up I take out for muskies.  One thing for sure, with 20lb Power Pro line, if I get one on, I don't think it will break me off.....  Actually, I do have an 8 1/2 foot casting rod that would not be a bad choice for fishing the tribs, especially for casting spoons at the mouth.

it is a known fact that steelhead has a keen sense of smell and will find food in stained water if they're hungry enough. when i fish in stained or muddier water i will scent my wooly buggers in a jar of shrimp salmon eggs or such. i don't know if it works but i do catch a few i figured i wouldn't have. it's just when i land them their breath stink.
for those of you who do not use flouro. some time when you see a pod of steelies that won't bite. throw in a single salmon egg if you got them. when a steelie comes and eats it without hesitation and you can't catch'em on mono. may i suggest you use flouro. this is one reason i use flouro. in clear water. seeing is believing.
one more, when i started steelie fish'n. i had a pod of steelies in off color but visiable water. couldn't catch a one. to make a short story shorter, a freindly fishermen, seeing me not having any luck and the pod of fish, cut about a 3 ft. section of flouro. and tied it to my leader. in about 5 casts i hooked 2 steelies that i hadn't been able to get to bite for the past hour or so. i'm a believer in flouro....
heck, i like to smell my food before i eat. don't you???

Have you seen the number of fishers at the mouth of Walnut? If that ain,t chumming then they have a choose of which egg they want.
50 lines with eggs is like McDonolds.
