Something cool at Peters Lake...

Had my 2 kids fishing for blue gills at Peter's this evening. There were 2 teenage kids fishing directly across from us near sun-down. One of them had a Blue Gill on the line and a large Bird of prey swooped down just as he went to pull it out of the water and took the fish right off of his line!

I thought it was a large hawk at first, but turns out it was a large owl. I'm glad it got his fish and not my 4 year old's...could have ruined him for life...

    That is pretty cool!

One time I was fishing at a lake and an osprey came down and grabbed a crappie and ripped it off of some guy's stringer. He wasn't nearly as thrilled as I was about it.

A co-worker of mine was fishing for land-locked atlantic salmon in a river in Maine a few weeks ago. He had a big one on, probably 28" he said, and when it surfaced 40 yards from the boat, a Bald eagle swooped down and took it off his line.

I had a pelican eat a small snapper I was reeling in, in florida. the bird was trying to fly away but it swallowed my hook and everything. I fought that thing in to almost 10 yards away when the fish and hook pulled out of his mouth. I wasn't sure what I was going to do if I got it in the whole way. That pelican was not happy at all!! haha

Let me tell you a story about Peter's Lake, this happened about 4 years ago...

My son and I were out in an 11' aluminum boat fishing the next cove towards the dam from where the little floating dock is. A lady and her son who was about 5 years old were walking on the trail. I hear the lady say Johnny.. STOP .. LOOK .. a mountain lion! Well, my son and I about fell out of the boat laughing. She looked very attentatively and was pointing up in the woods, we could not see what she was seeing. All of a sudden we heard this LOUD I guess you would call it a growl! My hair on my arm literally stood on end!!!! I never heard anything like it but never saw what it was.

BTW, what's the biggest fish you have seen caught there and have you caught any lately? I caught a #4 largemouth out of there about 5 years ago but it seems like the fish just quit in that lake.

Could have been a number of things. A bear, a dog, a coyote, or, the most likely one, some kids my age who thought it hilarious to scare the crap out of walkers.

I refuse to believe big bass arent in that lake. I have read the biologist's report(the lake is utter crap), but I have been over alot of the water in my yak with my FF. I like what I see for the most part with depth, structure and cover, but I havent caught anything over 14" there. I have only fished it 4-5 times and I cant seem to bring myself to go back when I could be fishing way more productive water. Last time I was there several weeks ago, 95% of the fish were suspended between 10-25'. I ended up catching two crappies between 8-10" on 4" senkos.

I have caught my share of nice ones there a couple of years ago and there are stories of people catching an occasional 8 pounder. We rowed that lake with a fish finder and there are some deep spots, 24' was the deepest that we found. We actually quit fishing that lake due to low production over the last few years. It's a shame, it is a nice lake. The only down side is there is ALWAYS someone mowing their yard ALL EVENING or the dogs from the kennel bark ALL EVENING, kinda takes away from the relaxation of the place. Man I wish I could use an electric motor there and I actually saw a guy do it, it would be my luck to get sited.

I hate the dogs from the kennel. Someone needs to donate the people who own that a couple hundred muzzles. Or a million buck and a rifle.

The lake frustrates me a bit. I havent caught any noteworthy fish, but I know they are in there, because I see them on the finder and I know the habitat and food are present. Maybe I will give it another shot this fall, but it is hard to get myself to go there, when I can go to a local pond and kill bass all day/night.

Aside from bass, could that lake support any other gamefish like walleye or muskie? 2/3rds of that lake is over 18' deep, so I know walleye would be possible. The fish and boat commis. should start allocating some of the warmwater stocking from canonsburg to peters.

    KJH & Leo,
I'm pretty sure I had seen in a local paper that the kennel and its property were going to be up for auction. That should quiet things down a bit. My brother takes his son to Peters Lake quite often. It's a nice place to wet a line and they rarely get skunked.

But don't forget about whoever it is up there on the hill obsessed with cutting his grass! Every time I'm there he is cutting his grass ALL DAY! Strangely enough, I had the same experience at Cannonsburg Lake. Speaking of Cannonsburg, I haven't fished there i years, anyone catch fish there? It used to be a premier spot, I quit going because the lake was so slimey and nasty.

Canonsburg sucks now, no two ways about that. The other side of the bridge is about 18" deep at the max. It has really silted in. I caught two bass there last time I was there and both came in to the boat like a wet towel. I could see they had already been caught before due to the holes in their mouth. Also caught a catfish on a small crankbait and that was the best fight of the day. Cant say I would send anyone that I liked to fish canonsburg.

I was at peters today and lost a rod and reel trolling my canoe. Still stumped how the rod came out of its holder, but w/e. lol if someone sees a fish dragging my okuma C3 rod around give me a shout and you will be rewarded. Saw something cool though-- freshwater jellyfish! Who knew they existed in PA lakes? They ranged in size from a nickel to a quarter. Quite a bit of them too.

They are freshwater jellyfish . No doubt there will be those that will say they don't exist , believing that jellyfish are a marine [ saltwater ] species only or say they don't exist in PA , but they do . Taxanomically they are known as Craspedacusta sawerbii . They can be found in other places , Pyme Lake being one of them . That's a neat discovery Pwk5017 ! Many people , let alone fishermen , never get to see them their entire lives .

Yeah, that 8lber prob has $300 of my equipment hooked to its big mouth.

Seriously, I wholeheartedly believe lunkers reside there. It is a deep body of water with plenty of baitfish, nice weed beds, great structure throughout the entire lake....I mean it just cant be filled with 12" fish. Unfortunately, as much as I want to believe, my results have been poor from that lake and I fish from a canoe with a 570DI unit.

I have heard the 8 pound legend for years but never found anyone who could confirm it, I'm wondering if it's urban legend? I can however say that the biggest fish I ever caught there was in the spring but it was only a 4 pounder.
