pop-r

I have been experimenting with them lately. I have taken off the front treble & adding flashaboo to the rear hook. This has eliminated the front hook from getting tangled when casting & also stopped the fish from getting hooked in the eyes or face. I have not noticed any change in losing a fish because of only using 1 treble. Also I have noticed that I am not getting hooked on cover when reeling a fish in through cover. I prob. shoud add some weight to the front split ring to rebalance it,as it rides tail down now but doesn't seem to matter as far as hits go.I am surprized that I am not losing more fish, because I let them jump as I am going to release them anyway. Also it seems that I lose less smallies than Largemouth, maybe because the smallies hit harder? Also color doesn't seem to matter, although I do prefer shad color. Does anyone on here use them for Stripers? sam

You don't want to remove the front hook if you're targeting Stripers. 85-90 percent of your hook-ups will come on the front hook.

Fish eat fish head first. I'd leave it on for the Stripers also.

I know that fish eat fish head first that is why I hook live bait through the eye sockets, but I think with the pop-rs it is more of a reaction bite since I normaly hook up in the first 2 or 3 yanks. As far as the stripers go,I would assume that they would have the entire lure in thier mouth. I was hoping to hear from someone that has actualy used poppers for stripers. sam

I HAVE used poppers to catch Striper ( with pretty good success ), and it's almost alway the fronk hook the gets them. Walleyes, Bass ( more often than not ), and the occasional channel cat get stung by the back hook. But not Stripers. That's just the way they hit.

If it works for you, go with it. My prototype - Porktown's Horny Alewife, only has a back hook. When I get around to making a few variations, I do plan to add one to the front.

I've had success not popping them, and just reeling in slowly, like a stick bait. I was tempted to use some of my 8" salt water poppers this year, but didn't get around to it. They're a bit too big for my wiper rod to cast properly. I'm wondering if the splash from it hitting the surface would sound like another wiper feeding?

I've used the 4" Rapala Pop R in the past with ok results on Byrds but just too many L/M liked it also. On the Pop R the front hook is almost center ov the lure so I would def. keep it on for Stripers like spoon said. Caught my 2 biggest Bass on the 4" Pop-R.

Those 3 Byrds I caught on the middle/back hooks last night came on a Crippled Shad which like the Pop-R doesn't really have a front hook, more centered on the lure. Like Sponnie said 85 - 90% ov the time it's the front hook in the Stripers mouth. Hope this helps.
