Suggestions please
A while back I posted a thread about a buddy of mine who suddenly passed away. I want to make a memorial for him by painting a rock and putting his intials and life timeline on it. I want to place it the stream at the least place we fished together. Any suggestions on what kind of paint and finish I should use. I'd like it to last as long as possible. Moderator, please feel free to move post if necessary.... Thanks, JEB

Why dont you try to engrave a rock? If you have a dremel tool i dont think it would be to hard. Just a couple bucks in bits. And it would last alot longer than paint. But you could always fill in where you engraved the rock with paint to make it stand out more. Just a thought :) Good luck!

Nice tribute Jeb. I was thinking an engraving too... I just noticed a couple nice paver stones by the pavilion at the Espyville launch last weekend, had walleyes on them. Really nice looking & they'll last for(almost)ever. I got nothin' on durable outdoor art paint, sorry.

If you have a monument company nearby, they can do sandblasting for you, cheap if your not in a hurry.

An oil base paint and primer should hold up well.

If you decide not to engrave, this is how I would paint it. ICI makes a really durable oil enamel or sign painters 1-shot is even better. Just make sure the rock is extremely clean(soap and water & then thinner) and dry when you begin. I would also recommend oil priming the area you intend to paint. It will take days for the enamel to dry, but it's much tougher than water based stuff. Depending on exposure to the weather and the type of rock you use it should last several years before it will need touched up. Certain colors don't do well in the sun, red pigments fade first. Never put any fluorescent paint in sunlight. It will bleach out in less than a year. Hope this helps. There's nothing better in life than a true friend. Sorry for your loss.

I wouldn't paint it....it will wear in a few years and be gone....I would definitely have the rock, preferrably granite or marble, engraved and that will ensure a long long life. Good Luck.

I think I'd go get the rock from the spot you want to put it. Kind of fitting. Then have it engraved. Nothing in the love of outdoors beats a good partner. Sorry for your loss.

I hope you got my PM. I've been doing this a long time. If in fact you are going to paint it, DONT use oil primer or oil for your color! Acrylic primers and paints will bond way better to the rock. Also the acrylics will hold their color wayyyy longer.
