Depending on how long you are keeping them in there an aerator is a must. You can pick up small pellet type fish food at a pet store that they should eat (don't over feed). Also you will want to try to get them some sort of light if you are using a cooler leave the lid up/off and at least let them get some ambient light like from a window or something. I have an aquarium at home so my suggestions might be more than most people would do but that's my 5 cents. Also wouldn't hurt to put a few bigger rocks in there. That will keep them content and hopefully stress free so they will last longer.

I have two plastic 55 gallon drums to separate gills and chubs and I built a giant filter out of two pond pumps and a five gal bucket plus a large aerator. This setup has been working great for me. Have had fish for months even kept some trout for a couple weeks in there and they didn't die. Til I ate em.

Gills will kill and eat surprisingly large minnows. And don't feed em too much it just makes a mess.

If you are going to use a cooler, try to glue some flexible plastic in all the corners for the full depth of the cooler to make the corners curved. If you keep them a long time, they'll keep bumping the walls in the corners and damage their noses, eventually dying. Round containers work best but you can make the cooler work a little better for ya by rounding the corners.

Water temp is another important consideration... the water can NOT get to warm or vary up and down .. that's our #1 problem at the store and why we are already not selling live minnows.. we can not keep the water cool (stable) enough to keep them more than a week ?????

I dug out an old aquarium and put some rocks in it and change half the water once a week with well water. From my original 3 dozen or so from April 15th, I have a half dozen left and still alive. I have taken them all fishing 3 or 4 times and just dump them back in when I get home. My basement is still cool and keeps the water temp down. I have had some die, but not too many. I'd like to get a larger setup and keep some chubs at home too.

I have a spare 55 gallon aquarium sitting in my garage. I would be willing to part with it for $50. Last I checked it still held water fine. I also have a lighting fixture for the top of it. The plug was cut off the power cord but that's a cheap fix. Let me know if anyone is interested. I'm in the south hills area and I'm willing to meet somebody halfway within reason if interested.

Also remember that the amount of fish a tank/cooler can support is related to the size also. General rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. This is your regular tropical fish rule, so you could probably double that amount for minnows. Water changes are very important in a crowded environment as well, half of the tank at least once a week, probably more. I keep a 10 gallon tank in my basement with a regular bar aerator and was able to keep ~50 minnows in there for 3 months over the winter using gold fish flakes and regular water changes. Dr. Trout mentioned water temp which is also important. I don't use any additives/dechlorination, I have city water, I don't worry about it.

If you are using the bait shop Fatheads they spawn around this time ov yr & the basic home owner will have a hard time (keeping any length ov time) & most will die. Pea gravel & some plant life might help keep 'em happy. crappy

If your keeping any chubs be sure and keep the lid closed cuz they'll all be dead on the floor after one night. They can jump surprisingly high with good accuracy

find yourself an old fridge, you know the old ones with a latching handle. carefully remove the coil and ref components without breaking the tubing. you may have to cut the fridge away from the components. submerge the coil as well as the themastat cap tube in the tank, dont be stupid and get electrcuted, of course we are all smarter than that. may want to separate with screen so minnows dont get stuck in coil. if you can submerge the t stat cap tube in water it will keep temps very stable round 40 deg. good luck still need air. if using tap water it must sit an hour or two so chlorine evaps away

Anyone with cutting torches has a tank in the garage. Fill plastic bag with water and minnows and inflate bag with O2. Good for a couple days and no aerator drone. Don't feed em. When they crap ammonia level goes way up and water changes are a must. Keeping bait long term is a babysitting operation unless you have an established biological filter of sufficient capacity to keep bulk. Buy em or trap em just before you go and save yourself a lot of time unless you have a lot of time to****around with active tanks.

Just go to a pet/fish store and tell them what you are doing and they'll be able to help you out. I use a chemical called Prime to dechlorinate the water in my fish tank. Do you have any filtration/air stones or anything else in there yet?

Yes , the amount of fish a container can support is related to the size of the container , but it's a general statement that is often quoted and misunderstood . More accurately , it's the surface area of the container because a larger surface area means more available dissolved O2 . For instance , commercially available are the 20 gallon standard tanks and the 20 gallon long tank . The standard 20 gallon tank is deeper than the 20 long . The 20 long can support more fish because the surface area is bigger .
