Spinning reel problem
My spinning reel has been giving me trouble lately. The bail won't snap shut when I start to reel, so I had to close it manually. I opened up the bail accidentally while trying to loosen it a little. And out popped a spring, a little piece of plastic with a hole in it, and a tiny piece of metal staped like a crowbar. So much for DIY. Anyway, I haven't been able to get them to go back in place. Any idea where they go? I suspect they are what make the bail snap shut, but I'm not certain.

You should be able to find parts manuals for just about any reel online....I had one of mine do this when I was cleaning it out...a Diawa, I believe....What kind of reel are you dealing with here??

It's usually best to manually close the bail after casting. It is a lot better on the reel, and in the future may delay things like this for some time.

SPRINGS..... they make me SICK ... seems to me ever since Japan and China started making our reels they put weak cheap springs in them... as mentioned I try to flip it closed with a finger everytime trying to save the spring, but even that does not always save the springs.... just another example of what -- made in the USA ==== USE TO MEAN !!!!! I still use two Mitchell 300s and they are still original from the 1960s.... and work FINE !!

I believe that without the spring, the bail won't stay shut when you are reeling it in. I just replaced a spring on my Abu garcia,I couldn't find 1 around here so I had to send to thier repair shop for 1. .20 for the spring,$3.95 to ship. With the price of gas it was cheaper to send for it than look around. I always close the bail with my finger while holding the line against the spool,it seems to eliminate line twist that my buddys get while closing the bail with the handle. sam ORIGINAL: leolizard Does it even need the spring?

I read an article very recently about this. Manually clicking the bail over is not only better for the real but GREATLY reduces the chance of any line mishaps. I searched for about 15 minutes online for the article but couldn't find it. I was going to post for everyone to read. I think it may have been in a magazine.

Leo, I did the same thing a couple years ago. And unless its a Performance tuned Quantum from now on you should close it manually. When you get this fixed look into getting quantum hot sauce and greese.

35 dollars... buy a new one. Start picking your crawlers butt. You will save a lot. If you're serious like me, you will do this. For tips on not having fish swallow your baits, pm dr. trout. for tips on getting chicks to do the opposite, contact Commander.

I thought all the newer Quantums had a magnetic bail trip. How old is your reel?
