Contaminant in W.Va. creek may be from drilling

WELLSBURG, W.Va. -- West Virginia regulators say a contaminant that Brooke County fishermen spotted in Buffalo Creek is a clay-like substance used in natural gas drilling.
Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kathy Cosco says the bentonite also was found this week in the Ohio River. She says it may have come from a Western Pennsylvania gas well.
The Intelligencer says exposure to bentonite may cause skin, eye, gastrointestinal or respiratory irritation.
The DEP will test samples to see what other chemicals might be present.
Water departments along the river are taking precautions.
Wheeling Public Works Director Russell Jebbia says the amount of bentonite seems to be so small that it's unlikely to have any impact.
Spokesman Kevin Sunday says the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection was unable to find the substance

Bentonite clay is used in a ton of different applications. Including residential houses, as a plug around the home's sewer in between the foundation and the first cleanout.

forms naturally,used as a laxitive,post must be right. it might be from a gas well or given all this rain we've had....sewage runoff from the 100 year old plumping in most west pa towns?

it could be from anywhere, papers bias everything they write. im not saying that it isnt from drilling, but like fishken said, you can probably find bentonite in houses sitting near the rivers

Ok so this is my first post, but when looking at this website and I seen this post I just had to sign up. I worked in the wellsburg area on the drilling rigs for the last 8 monthes or so and i can tell you that the PG (being local to the area) would of course make accusations that drilling would be the reason for pretty much anything that happens environmentally nowadays. I have worked all over Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia for many different gas leasers and drilling companies and let me tell you guys the standards that we were put up to working to in Wellsburg and the surrounding areas far surpassed almost everywhere else I have worked. Betonite is used very lightly in drilling, but just like PeteM said it has so many different applications that it could nearly anything. And now that I am done raving about this, I will say that I am a local to greene county PA, and what initially drew me to the drilling industry is the "Dunkard Fish Creek Kill" (a creek that i fished for almost a decade) that was first blamed on gas drilling. I now work for a company that purifies drilling brine water to prevent contamination

While your company may be "up to standards" that doesn't mean it's not having a negative impact on the environment.

How is the PG being biased, or making any accusations? The WV DEP issued a press release to the Associated Press, and the PG printed it.

Well I can't deny that there is an impact on the environment from drilling, and there always will be, its inevitable. Drilling is coming along way, especially from just four years ago. Chesapeake for instance covers there entire drilling location with 4 layers of heavy mil plastic to keep any fluids from seeping into the ground, they build one foot high barriers around anything that contain ANY fluid to keep spills contained incase it happens. I don't always aggree with all that happens with the industry, but its not the monster that media potrays it to be. There are good companies that are setting standards then there are the ones out there that don't have standards, and those are the ones you hear about. But in conclusion, i LOVE my fish, and i LOVE having my house heated in the winther. The money is pretty darn good too  haha
