lakers,flyrods and downriggers

i was watching some fishing shows and saw a couple guys using flyrods with downriggers for salmon.  has anyone ever tried this for lakers or steelhead in erie?  its not traditional flyfishing but looked like alot of fun.
i can't remember if they were using flyline or just mono.

another thought occured to me while i was putting new leadcore on one of my trolling rods.  leadcore looks sort of like fly line. why not spool up a fly roid with lead core and troll for eyes or steelhead?

does this sound legit or is all this rain giving me cabin fever and distorting my sense of reality

You should try it. Remember there's always more than one way to throw a rope and when experimenting different techniques its always rewarding to have them work

I'm not sure i think they use a mooching reel for salmon and steelhead when trolling with herring for bait. Looks like a fly reel....

I saw Tred Barta doing it for coho's in AK. I also saw guys fly fishing for lakers right after ice out in nothren Canada when they are still in the shallows. I also saw a show where they were fishing for giant halibut with a huge weight on the fly line.  You'd need a 20 weight for that !

i looked into the mooching reels. they are just large arbor single action fly reels.  i may give this a shot this summer and see what happens.  its only money right?
