poppers.......

i plan to spend a bunch of time this summer chasing gills with a fly rod. can anyone tell me which color, size, etc., poppers are most productive?

anyone use a tandem rig for panfish also. for the dropper, should i use a wet fly or a nymph. any help will be appreciated.

Tandem shmandem. Get some sneaky pete poppers in any color. I do like yellow though. Gills on nymphs= too many swallowed flies.

Yeah if you are going to do tandems I would tie a size 10 or 12 nymph on a 3 or 4x long shank or just a bigger hook to begin with. Its fun till about the 5th time trying to get a fly out of the gills stomach.

For gills I pretty much only use either black or orange poppers if I'm really serious about getting into the fish. I don't fish tandem rigs (prob'ly should) but regarding nymphs I go 10 - 8. Sometimes smaller nymphs outperform these but the time spent disgorging the smaller hooks from the fish just isn't worth it.

If I want to eliminate the smaller gills I go up to a size 6 hook.

    My poppers are #10 kink-shanks.

If I go nymph, I'll fish a fly I came up with, in about a 12 or 14, gotta watch the line carefully or they'll be pooping it out by the time you set the hook.

I've also caught them on 2/0 gurglers, so who knows?

Same here except I use the green/white leg combo. Also, crappie seem to hit them pretty good in early spring.

I have very little experience when it comes to fly fishing. I have not done a lot of it but I start out going after gills for I could get the hang of it. Foam spiders is what work for me the most.

I love to fish giils with the fly rod and probably fish for them more than I do trout. I use a Betts popper in Yellow and drop a Bully Bluegill 18" off the bend.  Deadly especially during the spawn.
