I've been going for a few years now and always seem to catch bigger fish in April but more fish in May.  I usually stay in 18-22 ft of water in April and move closer to shore as the water warms up.  Focus on any structure change or at the mouth of any stream that flows into the lake.  I've never fished the bay.  My biggest so far is 7 lb. 6 oz.  Don't forget a good depth finder and drift sock.  Bring a good amount of 1/4 oz tube jigs and heavier.  Suspending jerk baits work well in May.

I've noticed from my excursions in the early season, you'll catch quantity in the bay, but quality in the lake.  One day in early May, we fished the lake while my friends fished the bay. They boated 100+ to our 50.  They caught nothing over 4# and we caught nothing under 4# with 3 over 6#
