Bass Outfit
Im lookin to buy a new bass rod and reel and thought I'd get a few opinions from the board. If you could choose your favorite rod and reel for bass without budget concerns what would you choose?

Shimano Stradic 2500 reel 20 pound Power Pro with a flouro leader (length and weight of leader depend on conditions) The rod is less critical in my opinion. I prefer 6'6" one piece rods with at least 6 guides... But any decent-quality medium action spin rod will do. Some swear that you have to have metal guides with Power Pro, but I have been ok with ceramic guides. I tend to break the rod before I wear a groove in the guide.... This is by far the best spinning reel I have ever owned: http://www.fishusa.com/Shimano-Stradic-FI-Spinning-Reels_p.html

I never bought another spinning reel.

ORIGINAL: RhnstnCowboy I should try out one of those CI-4s... At least take a look at one and compare. It's 2.5 oz lighter than the Stradic FI, but on the down side, it can make your set-up appear a bit tip heavy. It needs to be matched up with the right rod. I plan on picking up a 3000 sometime this season. It has the same size body as the 2500, but has a deeper spool and a bigger handle.

ok - I think I'm sold on the reel - Shimano Stridec Spinning CI-4 but for rods I'm stuck among: 1) Abu Garcia Bass Spinning 7' VRS 2) St Croix Legend Spinning 6'8" MXF, or 3) St Croix Mojo Spinning 7' MF any opinions on these besides price difference?

I urge u to check this out....its priced well....it's really light, it has mad backbone....youll break jaws with the hookset.... nice bend, and balances perfectly with the reel your considering....lifetime warranty....I;m super satisfied 7ft one piece med http://www.fenwickfishing.com/prod.php?k=309782&sk=309782&p=PURGS%2049UL-M%20%20%281178967%29#GS%2070M-MF%20%20%281178977%29 I can't find a pic....its an absolutely beautiful rod....nice dark cork....killer graphics.....real eye candy However...my bud just got a mojo....and he loves it. What he likes about the rod....that I dont like about the rod...is that only the last 10-12 in of that rod sems to bend...the rest of it is pretty rigid. You can blow a fish into packaged meat with that rod....but for me its about the bend Nevermind...the fenwick sux ......I'd hate to see you wearin' my dress at the prom

ORIGINAL: Riverbum 2) St Croix Legend Spinning 6'8" MXF, I am quite biased towards St. Croix, since it's about all I build. My wife has that action/power in the Legend Tournament (blue), I have the Avid Pearl (fuchsia) and I'm building a Legend Elite (forest green pearl) for someone. I had an old Legend Elite (matte green), but sadly, it is no longer with us......got a replacement (brown pearl), but sold the blank before I could build it. I use that model exclusively for tubes and it is my second favorite blank, right behind the 6'9" ML/XF, which I use for dropshot. Currently have the SCV 6'10" M/XF on order...can't wait for that one to come in! I would strongly suggest looking at that model in the Avid line. I think you'll be quite happy with it and you'll save some $ over the LE and LT. IMO, the Avids are the best bang for the buck in St. Croix's offerings. ps. The carbon pearl finish on the Avid would look quite nice with that CI4!

Doubt we'd ever be on the dance floor at the same time anyway. Why 20lb? Couldn't I just load the reel with 10lb?

10Lb would probably work fine. Not braggin'...I find my self with 20lb+ fish a few times a year. I also feel like the extra diameter gives me an edge with toothy fish, and snags. The fish I'm after aint lines shy...Why not have a little extra beef?

For the few times a year I bust out gear, my bass fishing is done with a 6'9" MLXF St. Croix Mojo Spinning with a Sahara 2500 spooled with 10# PowerPro and a heavy Fluoro leader. Zero complaints with the setup.

The fish I'm after aint lines shy...Why not have a little extra beef? Thats my take on it too. With Power Pro being of such a thin diameter, and so flexible in all weights, why not put 20lb or even 30lb on your reel... That way, you can tailor the leader length, material and weight to whatever type of fishing you are doing. If you are fishing for panfish, you can tie on 6 pound flouro and flip small stuff, but if you are going after big stripers, you can tie a length of 20 pound mono. It just gives you more options... Also, the heavier the main line, the easier it is to just rip the leader off and re-tie if you get snagged.

G-Loomis Bronze Back SMR913S - SP 10lb-17lb 1/4-3/4oz Fast action medium heavy... And i'd probably put a Daiwa Certate Custom R on it. http://www.japantackle.com/Daiwa_reels/daiwa_certate.htm I already have a 2500 R with a 2508 custom spool on it and man... Love it, honestly best investement I ever bought... Other then the fact my GF is the one who's using that on my Loomis GL 3 783-2... Which gives me a sadface...
