Approved Trout Waters Question

I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse here, but I can't get my brain to wrap around a good answer. I searched the site too.

I see that Elk and 20 mile (my two fav creeks) are approved trout waters. According to the rule book, these tribs are closed to fishing from 3/1 to opening day, but reading in another section of the rule book, in the Lake Erie section, they're open year round (along with other tribs).

Can someone help me out here? I can still fish on these streams now right? Can you keep fish (I rarely do)?

It's been a long week...

Look under the Erie trib exceptions. There are special closure dates for those creeks. You actually have to look up the specific streams.

At one time in the past the streams were closed until opening day of trout season.  If my memory serves me correctly and sometimes it doesn't, I believe all the tribs were closed from April 1 to the opening day of trout.  Maybe some of the old timers on here could comment on this...

I believe the reason the tribs are open to fish is they want people to come up and fish.  This time of year is pretty dead around here except for the steelies in the streams.  The ice is for the most part off the lakes and bay, it well be a few weeks until the water warms up and the pike and other fish start biting well, and bass season does not open until June.  If there was no stream fishing now, not too many people would be fishing.

Also, I don't think they stock the streams until right before opening day, so the only trout that you will be catching will be steelies... or smolt.

With some of the morons on the tribs, it wouldnt surprise me a bit if someone actually did walk up and steal it.

Skip, That's how it has been in the past and imagine is still the same. They stock Elk, 20M & Cascade with brown pellet heads those 2 days.
Not sure if they do any other, can't remember right now.

PM sent. You people are making this so complicated. It's the same every year. Stocked or not, the Erie tribs have an exception due to the amout of steelhead fisherman. The fish commission knows that chrome fishing this time of year is huge in Erie and not subject to being shut down due to trout regs. Read page 7 of your regs book, then refer to the yellow highlighted paragraph on the right. The tribs are closed for 32 hours, AND ONLY 32 HOURS!, 12:01 on April 15th, to 8 a.m. on April 16th. ONE, 1 DAY, before trout season. So steelhead fisherman fish your brains out all day on the 14th, right up until midnight!!!!! Then stop for a day! Once the opener of trout starts at 8 a.m on the 16th, you're free to continue. Sheeeesh, we go thru this every year. Why d'yall make this so complicated?
