Slippery Rock Creek / French Creek--TROUT
My dad (who doesnt know very much about fishing) swears that both of these creeks are great areas for trout but i have never fished either of them during the season.. Anyone know if they are good creeks and worth my time?

Slippery Rock is hardly worth the time it takes to drive there, let alone fish it. Mostly just old men flinging dry flies upstream whether they catch one or not.

Not sure where he finds trout in French Creek unless it's around the mouth of a stocked stream. French Creek is not stocked. If you want smallmouth, walleye and the occasional muskie, then French Creek is your stream.

what would be a good muskie bait for this stream and where would i be able to hook into one, i would think the water would need to be fairly deep to have a muskie hold over.

trout slayerz slippery rock is a great creek. try the McConnells mill area or the gane lands in harlinsburg, or the area up along rt. 108, look for other cars parked in groups.

mcconnels mill section is nice. take 79 north to new castle, follow signs for mconnels mill, ya cant miss it. parking is marked along the road, then walk down into the gorge and enjoy. Its a beautiful area. It does muddy up real quick at times, so ive found it to be best fishing with no rain for a couple days prior.

I never target muskies in French Creek but have caught several small ones, 18 - 20 inches or so, usually on bass baits including Senko type worms and spinner baits while I was fishing for smallies. I do see people fishing for them with large bushy spin baits, as well as over sized stick baits. Others who target them can tell you more. As far as where, well I have seen them all over, including swimming next to my leg in depths as shallow as three feet while I was casting upstream at my camp on the creek below Utica. As long as I don't move my legs, they have stayed, one move and they take off! They do seem to like deeper pockets of water but they are not exclusive to holes.

Is it because of the highly touted biological diversity? Or is it j ust a lousy place for trout?

Trap some big creek chubs, make a float out of a 16oz plastic bottle, and have at it. Most likely you will pick up eyez also. First thing in the morning and right at dusk are obviously the best times, especially in a creek. There are muskies in basically the entire creek. Later in the spring is a great time to chuck those lures that look like baby ducks up there also. You would be surprised at the size of musky that lives in French.

Heres a pic of one of the ones you can buy online, or you can make your own. The ones in the pic come in different colors, yellow is the natural color. There are alot of woodies on French. You will feel like an idiot casting it until a musky snatches it...trust me.

Could be due to the diversity but I doubt it's a lousy place for trout although the creek warms up fairly rapidly but then again, so do most of the stocked creeks.

I went to the university and my former boss lives right along the stream on Rt108. I caught plenty of trout out of this creek. Spots to try are anywhere along 108 where there is a bridge or good pull off areas, they usually put fish in these spots. Plus fish will move with the high water we have had. Also like stated above the McConnels Mills area is a good spot to try. There is also Taylor Run that is stocked and it dumps into the Rock, another option, it is small and gets cleaned out after the 1st week, but worth trying. Good Luck !

ORIGINAL: SevenMileShowcase Nice, nice. Thanks JT83 Im glad the Buffalo thread went to hell hahaha. No problem. Classic musky lures will work up there too, just thought I'd give you something a little different. A buddy of mine has a camp right on the creek and there are good musky all the way upstream. That Buffalo thread just got out of control. Too much griping and not enough reports. I was half tempted to try and start another one.

My former boss lived right above the campground and we have done well in that area. It's a little bigger there than most trout streams, you have to work the holes out in the main creek.

ORIGINAL: birdhunter Hi everyone, anyone know of any campgrounds close to slippery rock , or neshannock? thanks Bird - Spoon suggested a few on this link. The one has Slippery Rock Creek run right past it. I have never been there, just saw online, so might be a cliff and not so easy access? I have driven through the Cooper's Lake Campground, which would require a short drive to SRC, but have heard the lake itself is full of bass. This is the one off of I79 that has that medevil festival in the Summer, so might want to verify if that or something else is going on before booking. http://forums.fishusa.com/m_367350/mpage_1/key_cabins/tm.htm#367350
