Rod Cleaning

I have an older (6-7 years or so) Fenwick HMX spinning rod with the synthetic insert in the handle.  Over the years the synthetic part of the handle has become sticky and filthy.  I have tried to clean it a number of times with virtually no success.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to clean the layer of sticky, slimy crap from the handle without ruining it?

If I did that the reel would become permanently attached. I also don't really want to add any bulk to the handle.

Maybe this will help you understand what I am talking about.  It is the gray synthetic part that needs to be cleaned.

I use Greased Lightning from almost any grocery store. It breaks up the crap from egg sacs, dried worms, etc.

It comes in a yellow squirt bottle and will be with other household cleaners.

It is strong and must be wiped/washed off before long but I use it on almost everything I own. Cleans hunting shoes, spots in hunting gear, woodwork, grills etc.

*Also takes a layer of skin from your hands so wash them thoroughly.

I use carb cleaner or brake cleaner but you sure can't leave it on long. Or the plastic will melt.

Well, I tried just about every cleaner I had in the house including some mean green and a whole bunch of other crap that seemed like it was going to burn my hand off to no avail.  My last attempt was with some toxic bathroom cleaner I found.  I let it soak on the handle for a few minutes and finally some of that layer of scum started to come free.  I am going to repeat a few more times and I think I will be all set.

Again thanks for the suggestions guys, I was getting ready to toss the thing out

One last suggestion....goof off...brand name Goof off. Cuts most anything. Wish I would have thought of it earlier.
