fly fishing

Looking to get out and start fly fishing, got the rod late last season so didn't get a lot of practice time in. Does anyone know of any rivers or small lakes around Washington where i can get some practice casting in? I don't care if its blue gills or carp I just want to get my casting down pat and be able to hook into a few fish while doing so.

I don't live to far from Reservoir 3 or 4 do any of you know if they are open to public fishing?

If I might add a bit of advice on fly casting, I would suggest not fishing for fish right away. Take an hour or two and cast in an open lawn setting. This way, you can focus entirely on casting mechanics, and not have the devil angler on your shoulder convincing you that if you just flick your wrist more, you can hit that school of feeding gills. An hour or two of concentrated practice should certainly have you ready to fish, but when you do, I encourage correct mechanics.

Are you talking about the reservoir 4 that is on waterdam road by rt 19? If so, that one is permit only fishing ive heard. I am looking into it at the moment, cause it is a 10 minute drive for me and seems to be a nice piece of water.

I suggest setting up a bucket in your yard and practice hitting it start close and work you way back till you can cast all your line also if you are going to stream fish then you need to be better at roll casting most streams don't have the room to let you overhead cast

thanks for the info guys. last year I practiced in my yard, still am when i dont have time to hit the water. I went down to Chartiers Creek near meadow lands working on the roll cast. Right when I though I had it down pat, it'd get tangled up.

Remember 12 and 2 when your casting that should be your rod position 12 on back cast 2 on forward cast should take long till your casting like a pro just got to get a feel for when the rod loads up. When I first started I would watch my back cast and as soon as the line would flatten out start forward gently and excel forward quickly but smoothly
