slot limit on walleyes

What would you think of a slot limit on walleyes in the alleghany river? I see alot of other places that do this and say how well it works. Since they quit stocking it to see how it would do. I have seen small walleyes in the river( 5 to 8 in) whats your opion???

I think it would be a great idea. I catch alot of small eyes from the river in the fall.

Aint much meat on a 5 to 8 inch walleye unless you are Amish, I think the slot should be larger...WF

Best idea I've heard in a while, keep the 15 to 20 inchers let those big girls have a chance to do their thing.

Why not put a slot limit for all of the state? Not just for the alleg. river!

In lakes/rivers where there is documented natural reproduction, it is probably a good idea.  For other lakes where there is no natural reproduction, it is essentially a put and take fishery and it won't help anything other than giving someone else a chance to catch a nice one so in those instances, I don't think I would support it.

    I agree with you E&G.

Based on the PFBC historic stocking, the Allegheny hasn't been stocked from Lock 6 downstream in quite some time.  We have been relying on natural reproduction.

With that in mind, I would like to see a slot imposed on the Lower Allegheny which would protect the class of fish in the 18-24" range.

I like the idea too. But I thought that I read an article about a study on Mil Lacs lake in Minnesota that suggested that the slot limit didn't help like you'd think due to lots of fish swallowing baits like leetches under slip bobbers and then getting released and dying. I'll see if I can find it, but it was a few years ago.

there is always going to be fish kill from deep hooks. mishandeled fish and poachers but the overall pic is more quality fish released back to reproduce
