Handheld GPS
So I just bought a Garmin Oregon 450 to use on the boat this year. Anyone have any experience with handheld GPS units? Can anyone recommend a good set of maps? I want to use it to chart paths trolling and know bottom contours, structure, etc. I mostly fish Arthur, Pymatuning, The Allegheny, and the surrounding lakes. I'll most certainly use it for hiking/camping and hunting too but right now it's all about the fishing. Just looking for info...

I'd be interested in finding out more myself. I bought one 2 years ago off of a guy on craigslist without the instructions figuring it would be easy to figure out.....not even close to true. I haven't been able to use it yet.

Yeah, what model do you have? Does it have a USB cable? Mine has the instructions in PDF right on the unit. I have a pretty good idea how to use the device, I'm just looking for advice on maps.

I don't believe you can get freshwater charts for the handhelds.

i started out using a hand held gps unit.....since then broke down and got lowrance hds unit, but the hand held did its job as far as speed for trolling i put velcro on back of it and stuck it to console worked great for that aspect. as far as using the plotting end of it not that great just didnt go into enough detail. try to save up and get a finder with gps track plotting you wont be sorry, i have the map chip in mine that has arthur on it and its sweet dead accurate you can troll the road beds and bump any hump you want .

Not sure if Navionics is compatable, but they make some pretty accurate GPS maps for the lakes mentioned. I think they are more geared towards the boating GPS companies though. Check out their web site, they're customer service folks could probably help. They were very helpful in resolving a glitch that I had with a Lowrance unit and their chip.

The Navionics is compatible with the Lowrance handhelds...not sure about Garmin. I got the Lowrance Endura last fall & can just switch between the fishin' hot spot maps or navionics maps, just have to swap cards. (navionics is way better than the FHS maps) I know, not pertinent to the OP....but thought it might help someone that doesn't have a handheld yet. One thing I don't care for about mine, the cold weather operation. Batteries drain really fast & the LCD screen gets slugish the colder it gets. Keeping it in an inside pocket helps.

I have a delorme works great, not easy to figure out without the directions. I finally dug them out and did it right but I use the NOAA charts and download them onto my sd card and it is also compatable with the navionics card. I was told garmin is not compatible with navionics. West marine carries alot of the navigation chips in stock

It doesn't look like my device is compatible with the Navionics maps but I placed an email request with tech support anyway. I think I'm probably going to go with the Garmin Inland Lakes maps.

I have the same unit. Use it for geocaching. You can find updated maps and info at www.mygarmin.com

I believe that hunting on Sunday has a lot to do with the farm bureau. They are mostly against it.If Sunday hunting was to get approved many farmers not in favor of Sunday hunting could simply post "NO SUNDAY HUNTING" as could anyone else. I really don't see any harm in making Sunday hunting legal. We have Sunday hunting now in Pa, just not for all game. Write your legislators to approve Sunday hunting.
