Pikes Run

I went down to Pikes run for the first time this morning.  I went to the delayed harvest section, and could barely find any parts of the stream that were not posted.  Is this stream worth the 20 minute drive to try and find the non-posted areas?  Does anyone know how many fish they stocked there on 3-2?  Thanks

Plenty of fish in Pike Run. I hear they're hitting power worms in the Bubbling gas hole.

thanks flyway, where is the 'bubbling gas hole'? Is it in the delayed harvest section? and is most of that section posted? I was sort of disappointed to see so much private land.

The bubbling gas hole is at the upper end of the delayed harvest. You can't miss it. There is natural gas bubbling from beneath the waters surface, pretty unique.

I pretty much live ON Pike Run, and it isn't worth a 2 minute walk, haha.  I load up and head to the mountains.... Yough, Meadow, Laurel.  Pike Run is known as "hubcap creek" here to the locals.  All of those homes (if that's what you can call them) along all that posted land, dump their sewage directly into the creek, and that's the entire length from Deemston to Granville Holler.  There is no city sewage.  Aside from that, the creek itself is all but a trickling mudhole save for the higher flows of very early spring.  Do yourself a favor, and spend an hours drive if you have to, and head for the Laurel Mtns.  Sorry for the ringing endorsement.

first off... puffy, the way you refer to those homes on the creek or as you said if thats what u call them they are homes and people live in them including my family members so dont talk s**t on places like that. second of all the creek is worth a 20 minute drive if you dont want to drive far to catch trout this time of year especially if you cant afford the gas to go to places like the yough or meadow or anywhere in the highlands for that fact there are decent holes and pocket water on pike run and as a matter a fact i fished it quite often when i was in highschool because it was a 10 minute drive from me if that. u will occasionally hook into some decent pelletheads in the delayed harvest section and sometimes might even catch holdovers depending on how the weather is.... anyways its not a bad place to hook into some stocked trout if you have cabin fever

I agree if you can't afford to go up the mnts pike run is a viable option to shake the cabin fever. Although I rather fish up the mnts myself but I live about the same distance between both more options up there

The delayed harvest section is the best trout stream in that part of the Mon Valley. Take that as you will. The biggest barrier to catching fish there is that some people take them out of season, often with live bait. I've caught quite a few nice fish through the entire stretch over the years.

Well, the past two posts have renewed my hope for the stream.  I figured it couldnt all be bad.  Still, I walked 3/4 of the delayed harvest section and every nice spot/hole I saw was posted.  Do you guys just disregard the private property signs, or are you fishing the few holes that arent in private property?

Son, save your righteous diatribe for others.  I grew up there... my entire life, and am probably twice your age.  You apparently grew up in Fredricktown, which is no better in aesthetic beauty by the way.  I didn't say a thing about the PEOPLE (also my relatives and friends) that live in the former coal mining towns of Daisytown, Granville, Smallwood, Walkertown, etc..., however, 90 % of the "homes" are either abandoned, or so completely in need of renovation, that they should be destroyed.  And yes, ALL of the running water from those homes are piped directly into the lovely trickle of waste we call Pike Run.

as a matter a fact i grew up on fishpot road and if you grew up in the area then i dont need to explain where that is and i dont care if you are twice my age when you refer to places as homes(if thats what u call them) and dont specifically say the houses that are abandoned i take that as your talking about every home down there so maybe next time you should think before you type something stupid. and i dont care if the waste drains into pike run or not its the best trout water in the area if you cant afford to drive somewhere not all of us can drive to the mountains to fish every weekend so we deal with what we can get to and enjoy the fishing.

I've come across sulfurs there myself actually, though it was a few years ago. They weren't coming off in any great numbers, but there were enough to get the attention of the fish.
