Black Deer

Anyone here know about black deer ? My aunt sent me pics in email from someone she knows ? It had doe with 2 fawns one normal 1 completely black. Have seen true albino,s pink eyes, ears ,I think 5, and 2 piebald since I can remember. Never even heard of black whitetails.

Very rare. Much rarer than albinos. Have never seen one, but have read about them more than once and seen a couple of pics in magazines and on the net. Believe they are called melanistic.

Back some 20 years or so. I had been seeing a herd of very dark colored deer, off rt 228 before all the crap(buildings) filled the fields. One night coming home I seen a doe hit by a car and stop to help get the deer off the road. Well it was one of those dark colored deer I have been seeing. At further inspection of the deer the guy that hit her and I seen that the deer was actually BLACK!! I haven't seen any of them since But was pretty wild. Maybe it was what they were feeding on?? Yea,the black hull of a walnut turns them black. It's a gene thing just like and albino.

Nice - Been hunting and in the woods over 100 day a year for over 55 years and never have seen one. Piebalds and albinos but never a black one. That would make some mount.

I was pondering what I would do if I ever encountered a rare deer. If cabellas pays that much for a deer I wouldn,t pass it. A guy I work with , uncle lives in the mid west where there are some massive trophy,s taken and the hunters will take the cape, head to a bank and have them stored for safe keeping pending a sale like you mentioned bloodyhand

I guess I was a little misinformed. But non the less, this buck was definately shot. I shot a piebald doe about 5 yrs. ago in Crawford county. Never even crossed my mind it could be worth a few bucks. Heres a link to snopes with that calico buck.

Hey Tull - those are some of the most unusual deer pics I have ever seen -Really neat- never heard of them before. Have seen piebald and all white in the woods and never shot one  ( some places you cant) and I have shot some with a  mane like a horse  -but much shorter -but had NEVER seen a black one till those photos--THANKS.
