Couple pics and a question
Hit up the river again today. Fish weren't in their usual lies so I had to do a little exploring.. Ended up with 3 Brownies and a couple Rainbows. Why is there such a color varience in the Brownies ?? Some are all yellow and colored up and others are very light colored with almost no yellowing. I've noticed most of the bigger ones are colored up but have also caught some nicer ones that almost looked wahed out..   Light colored Brownie.  Colored up Brownie.

several factors.1) as the browns age they tend to become more colorful.2) genetic variations in in the individual fish. just think of all the sources for stocked trout. alot of DNA mixed up in those hatcheries over the years.

I've always noticed a difference in coloring between river born fish vs. Hatchery. Maybe a late spawner???? Males do tend to hold out longer than females. Regardless; very nice fish.

Bings , Im no expert by any means but doesnt sex have something to do with it? Im guessing the top brownie is female and less colored up and the second brownie is a male which is more colored up. Kinda like with birds....males have the more distinctive colors than the females. Can anyone confirm this hypothesis???

Great job.
On the color thing, I think that most of the popular reasons for the color difference were stated and they are probably all true -- the sex of the fish, the genetics of the fish Loch Leven strain tend to be more yellow to golden, If memory serves me correctly), the age of the fish, etc. I would throw in two more -- the diet of the fish (notice the difference in color of the flesh of a wild caught salmon -- pink to red to orange -- and that of a farm raised salmon before color is added ot make it look like a wild caught salmon -- white) and the location they came from with regard to light exposure. I observed an experiment on the coloration of smallmouth bass many years ago. The bas was caught and photographed. It was then placed in a light colored environment (white cooler) for several hours. It changed to a much lighter color than when originally caught. The same fish was them placed in a dark colored environment for several hours. It had then changed to a much darker color than when caught.
I would say that it could be any of those reasons and, more than likely, a combination of more than a few.
