ICE CARP ?

I fish 3 local ponds in the summer for bass and panfish that also has a ton of BIG carp in it. Is there any effective way to target them through the ice, do they shut down in the winter or just move out of the shallows ?
I was thinking of chumming with a little corn down the hole, then setting up a line on the bottom baited with corn.
Am I wasting my time or do you think this might be worth a shot ?
Thanks !

I've never hooked into one on the ice myself, but it does happen.
You'll want to use a good sized auger though...
Sorry I'm not more help, maybe one of our resident carphedz will chime in.
Here's a couple threads from iceshanty with some hogs...
and these guys seem to know what they're doing.

Thanks for the links Pork, it looks like they can be caught on corn. Gonna try tomorrow with a few tip ups and see.

Went out and chummed two holes with sweet corn soaked overnight in vanilla and set up my tips ups and sat and watched them not pop up all day. But, I know there is BIG carp in there, so I'm going to try again. But I did catch a few fish, gills and perch and lost a big bass. I really had my hopes up on those flags going up, would've loved to rangle with one of them 15-20 pounders I see all summer swimming around.
Should I target the shallows or go deeper, I was set up in about 12-15 foot of water, but usually see them in the shallows in the summer ?
    Thanks !

Interesting question. I was talking to a fellow a week or so ago while ice fishing and I asked him if he had ever caught any carp through the ice. He answered in the negative and I told him that I  never had either. The subject came up because we were talking about a local lake that we both fish that has a huge population of them. I agree that they still eat through the winter months and that their metabolism no doubt slows, but from my own experience, and never being on the ice to see one caught, perhaps it's just not a common thing to catch them.

It's all about location, once you find one there's more in that wintering hole....Sweet flavours suck this time of year they want something more savoury that has some food value to it so they don't have to feed or move that often and waste their stored fat...

Thanks, If I get out again I might try that. My wife just got a blood clot in her leg and is going to be laid up for a while. Gotta take care of Momma and the kids, no fishing for a while.
