Just an Observation

In reading the threads on this board. It really appears that what seem a never ending "debate" is starting to weigh heavy on all parties. It seems a level of frustration has set in. Leading the discourse to become increasingly personal, antagonistic, and accusatory. From ALL sides.

Now I am not naive enough to believe that an end to the "deer wars" is in the foreseeable future. Nor am I suggesting that ANYONE just give it up. But how about a cease fire, for say 2 weeks? Take a deep breath, smell the? Snow?, and let the heat die down a bit. Find some common ground, sharing some of the positive/interesting moments in your days afield. THEN return as folks with differing views, as opposed to adversaries.

Plus, you could ALL have the "last word" ( for two whole weeks ) by simply typing "I agree" on this thread.

Get Informed, Get Involved, And Make A Difference.

Step Up, or Step Aside

The next time you say "Somebody should do something", remember that YOU are somebody.

Actually, what we did was take Worm Wasters suggestion and move the deer debate to it's own thread so as not to hijack anyone elses topic. No reason to quit debating what is going on so long as it is still going on. It is a hot topic, has been since it started, and as more information comes out showing that it has failed in it's stated objectives and was really politically motivated it may get more heated rather than less. People now have the choice to ignore the thread if they choose but comparing the number of hits the thread gets to the others in the hunting boards people are interested. There have been no invites to meet in the back alley to settle things that I'am aware of.

I'm going to Hijack this thread. The following is a PROPOSED change for 2011

The Commission is proposing to amend §131.2 by adding, amending and deleting certain definitions. The first amendment involves a reduction in the number of points required for a deer to meet the definition of an "antlered deer" in WMUs 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and 2D. This reduction (from 4 to 3 points) is also accompanied by the elimination of consideration of brow tines as a point. This amendment will make it easier for hunters to determine the legal status of an antlered deer.

Now. Tell me if I'm reading this right. Brow tines do not count as a point, so what most of call an 8pt is now legally a 6pt, a 6pt is legally a 4pt, etc. So I would be able to shoot a legal 6pt here in 2B, but that same deer would have been a legal 8pt in 2010.

I tried that when I posted that my 13 yr. old niece got her first doe and for my efforts I was called a hypocrite for letting her harvest a doe in an area with few deer. I think the divide the PGC has created is to big to be overcome by stories of positive hunting experiences because they just show that some hunters still have good hunting in areas where the plan has failed to reduce the herd while many others are feeling the negative effects of extreme HR.

The divide YOU created for yourself. Happiness/enjoyment is something that is created. If you want to sit on here 162 hours of a 168 hour week, each week of rifle season, then so be it. You aren't fooling anyone. It is now January 21. You have 10 months to find some deer. There are around 30,000 deer killed in your WMU annually. My WMU is bigger and gets half that. If getting your niece on deer really means that much, you'll do it. You'll get it done without blaming anyone but yourself. If it doesn't mean much, keep playing patty cake.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Sk, Does the harvest in deerflys unit mean things are great there? Or is it a testiment to how poor most other areas have become? Im not overly familiar with the unit, but do know that the arguement can go both ways.

Also, how many more deer would be killed in your unit, or any other if they had the longer seasons and unlimited doe tags as is the case in deerflies?

No, it means it is a lot better than he paints the picture to be. I am the central pa no deer public land hunter. I see the folks here and mostly on huntingpa yappin' about no deer in the immediate areas I hunt. I even know some of the guys that whine about my area online. They don't have a clue how deer run that mountain and they don't get out of the truck during the season ! Does that mean deerfly doesn't know his deer and doesn't put forth effort ? No, but 5C certainly isn't 2G either.

I spend alot of time in the woods, but it's for enjoyment, not a necessity to kill a deer where I hunt. My area is bigger and gets half the kill deerfly's does. He will make it happen for his niece if he wants. If he expects to sit and wait for the PGC to bring back deer for his small property, he will be disappointed.

Not many more could be killed where I hunt. Because there aren't that many. The ones that survive are on the steeps after the first day of rifle and there ain't no human gonna get them there. The amish pull some out every year but they can only cover so much area in a single season.

Wait till the harvest numbers come out in March !

I may take in the snow tomorrow. Dad is a slacker and needs to pull two treestands. I ain't climbing those icy trees but you go right ahead. I catch u !

Im sure there'll be some interesting things to discuss coming out of the upcoming meetings that are within the next two weeks time frame spoken of. Im sure alot of guys will want to discuss them. I dont think any coordinated "break" is necessary. If guys want a break, they dont need to say "ok" in a post designed for that purpose. They can simply not post and or not read if they so choose.

How do you know "sat on here" for 162 hrs of 168 hour week of rifle season? I don't have a camera on my computer, so are you sure I was sitting in front of the computer all that time or are you just desperate to discredit me because you don't have the facts or the knowledge to defend your opinions?

In case you forgot, I said I walked about five miles without a gun the day my niece got her doe ,so I got it done and didn't blame anyone else.If I wanted a deer for myself I certainly could have done that, but I can't imagine what I would have been called if I was called a hypocrite for letting my niece shoot a doe. I could have filled my doe tag a few days ago when I saw 3 doe bedded about 20 yds. off of one of my ATV trails. I saw them 3 different times and they spend the whole day where they were bedded while I was cutting firewood within 50 yds. but I didn't even bother to pick up my rifle.

At this stage of my hunting career it is not about me, but rather it is about the future of the sport.

If anyone is serious about see/finding/shooting a deer this year, NOW is the time to SCOUT for this year. I have a little bit of snow on the ground around here. If you WALK, not ride around in the woods or roads you will eventually find deer signs(tracks, rubs, poop, beds). Just doing this a couple of times BEFORE the season will show you WHERE(in the general area) you should be hunting THIS year, forget about your old stump you hunted for 30 years. Hunt the deer that are STILL LIVING on this Earth. Less time on here and MORE time IN the WOODS= SUCCESS.    Once again SK is right on.

162 out of 168 is a figure of speech.  And you know that.  Lighten up.  I presented you the facts about your WMU.  You just don't like it.   There's more deer killed in your unit than many others combined !  ..so why would anyone call you anything for your niece shooting a doe ?  Was naming calling on fisherie REALLY a deciding factor in whether allowing your niece to shoot a doe ?  If so, yikes !

I have no idea why anyone would call me a hypocrite for allowing my niece to harvest a doe. The name calling had absolutely no effect since it occurred after I posted that she got her first deer on the last drive of the last day of the combined season. Furthermore, even after the name calling I would have been happy if my wife or sister harvested a deer be it a buck or a doe.

The simple fact is, no matter what we do, the PGC is determined to reduce the herd by 40% in 5C, so the only rational decision is to harvest what we can before there is no reason to continue hunting in some of the best deer habitat in the state.

A little bit of snow? You really do need to come North. I did one of my woods walks yesterday in 8" and we got another 4" today. With the way the wind is blowing all tracks will be fresh in the morning. I have a 2-1/2 year old 5 point at my bird feeder as I type. Saw another fisher track and some red fox. First time out in a month without seeing a coyote track.

Hey Deerfly--keep her hunting, she will never forget it or you for giving her the opportunity to hunt. We ALL remember our first Deer be it a skipper or an 8 point.

Used to see a lot of NO DOE HUNTING signs in PA back in the 60's & early 70s- do folks still post that way? Seems like a lot of folks here own property if its still legal and you dont approve - Post it. Who knows, perhaps others of a similar mind set will follow.

Hey Noplace- will be chasing Steel with the fly rod in  the S/R next week. BRRRRR

I'll hunt with her as long as she wants to hunt or until someone else takes my place.
I haven't seen many no doe hunting signs lately, but I think that the no trespassing signs have replace the no doe hunting signs.

I hunt 1-B and this year 2010 the #s were down to about one quarter of deer I saw last year . Private property with corn and lots of white oaks but the number of deer I saw was scary. My uncle has a farm in 4-D. In 09 him and his sons who are experienced hunters saw few deer. This season 2010 none of them harvested a single deer because they didn't see any! When is this gonna stop?
