Get a reel that functions, and a good fly line. I'm sure fishusa has a reel at your price point. The reality is that short of saltwater or salmon/steelhead, you don't need a high end reel with a high end drag, just a line holder that doesn't bind up or over run.

Congrats! Especially if, as the screen name implies, you like tying into smallies. They are a riot on a 5wt.

Buy the best reel you can afford!

I like Ross reels for value.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

For entry level, I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Okuma at their price point. That is, lower-to-mid level Okuma. Once you get up above the $100 price point, your options widen a bit, and an Orvis BBS is a leader in that category. Really, once you get above $100 though, I can't think of ANY reel at the moment that is widely considered to be junk.

Maybe let us know what you're looking to spend?

never handled the **** but it's a winston and should be a very nice rod.  even though you will not get reel screeming runs you do want a reel with a nice drag, it just makes it nicer when you do get a fish that takes drag.  as said  don't skimp with the reel but don't go over board either.  there are a lot of great reels in the $100 - $200 range.  a couple of my favs are the orvis BBS, lamson konic and guru ( older velocities if you can find it in this range) ross cla, and loomis venture reels will last you a life time and then some.
