You can go online and sign a petition at this website:
www.sosinpa.org
The petition requests that a moratorium be put on drilling until the facts and risks can be determined.
Also, the drilling is closer than many think. Just recently a well was put in at Cross Creek country club. Thats just a hop, skip, and jump from Oil Creek.

Do you have any clue how many wells are already by the banks of Oil Creek ?? And not a single problem yet...
I park at one well site that is 75 yards from the creek....

If I remember my history correctly the worlds first oil well was drilled on the banks of oil creek. That area is riddled with wells of all kinds.

Drake's Well was on the banks of Oil Creek in Cherrytree Township.  McClintock #1 is the oldest producing well, and are thousands of other wells within the Oil Creek valley and Venango County in general

oil creek has the most well sites along it and has the most abundance of aquatic insects of any other stream in venango county.

I don't think its the oil & drilling that is the big concern is it? Isn't it the waste water that could be the problem ?

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

That is the problem, the waste water is putrid.

Just a little perspective. I grew up not far from Oil Creek. I can remember when the only fish in the stream were suckers and chubs. And there were days when you could see an oily sheen on the surface of the water.
My concern is that we have not learned the lessons history has taught us and we are going to repeat our mistakes.

The fishing on Dunkard Creek got better as gas companies started drilling the area. With the raised salinity of the water, habitat was created for flounder, blue fish and stripers, all in Dunkard Creek. What an oppurtunity!

being involved directly in the Marcellus Gas play has allowed for our company to see a huge increase in profits, almost 10 fold.  For those of you who say this creates no jobs, I would have to disagree.  Please see the first article on our website, we are trying to start an attempt at reviving the once strong steel industry and jobs available in Pittsburgh:

Just like most things, there are pros and cons within this issue. Each of us has our priorities and list of issues in order organized by imortance to us. Its inevitable that people will argue over what is most important. I'm not going to bother mentioning my stand on the issue since I don't feel it really matters, but I will say this...We certainly are at a point in history where our country is struggling financially, economically, emotionally and morally. The questions to ask would be, who will the gas and shale drilling benefit?? Realistically, who and for how long?

Had to be before my time I've lived within a mile of Oil Creek for over 50 years.
It's where I cut my teeth trout fishing. Always been a good amount of fish up here at the head waters..The Amish are a bigger threat than any gas wells..

the 50's We lived near where Two Mile Run park is now - up the road from the girl scout camp. My brother and I would ride our bikes down to Oil Creek to fish. There was a small stream, I think it was Cherry run that was stocked with trout, but there were no trout in Oil Creek.

Ask the PA farmers in the SW counties who have had livestock killed due to poisened water from fracking. TU has the articles. It' going to hurt habitat. Like BP these guys won't pay for what tehy do.

I can guarantee you, nothing will stop fracking in PA....That state will exploit every revenue source it can develop.....in NY, they did temporarily halt fracking next to the NY city water supply....NY city has some very powerful people with extremely expensive realestate that can, at least temporarily, halt fracking.

Everyone talks about the jobs. If 16 guys are hired to drill a well. 14 or 15 are from Texas or out of state.  What a joke.

These companies need employees with experience, these companies are willing to hire local, but are locals willing to work, and can they pass a drug screening?   And remember not all jobs in the gas industry are for those who "are hired to drill a well." There are Truck Drivers, Geologists, Water testing companies, etc. Lets also not forget about the steps it takes before a well is drilled, such as leasing of gas rights or courthouse research. In my area there are many people employed in the industry that otherwise would have no job.

The Cross Creek well was a shallow gas, not Marcellus

Marcellus is shallow gas. To be considered "Deep gas," the reservoir would need to be below the Oriskany Sandstone I believe.

Seeing that the Cross Creek well was 1600 feet, and Marcellus formation is 6,000-10,000 feet that is "deep" for this area of PA

Marcellus shale is around 5000 feet down....From the maps I've seen, I think drilling will be contained to a width of around three counties all along the western edge of the Appalachian mountains....The thickness there runs from 100 feet to over 300 feet....as you move to the west and northwest part of PA, the shale thickness is around 50 feet.

Property that runs along established gas pipeline might get drilled in NW Penna....Remember, it costs around $1 million to install a mile of pipeline....Infrastructure cost is going to be a limiting factor where the Marcellus shale is thinnest.

Hold onto your hats...There's another shale deposit below the Marcellus...It's called the Utica shale and its over 400 million years old..In Quebec Canada, the Utica shale out crops. Forrest oil has drilled it and findings are promising. The footprint of Utica shale is even larger than Marcellus. The depth of the deposit goes down to 12000 feet in south central PA around Somerset/Cambria counties. The deposit is much closer to the surface as you go north and west.

The current belief is that those areas were Marcellus shale gas production is economically productive will see Utica shale drilling since the infrastructure will already be in place.
