Winter catfishing

Was on the beaver on Wensday and caught a couple channels One was a little over 8lbs and had a good flathead that got off right a shore. I was useing some of those NASTY shad-in-a-bag that I bought from a gander mt store OHHH THEY SMELL BAD LOL But they worked. When I first got to the river there was skim-ice that melted off pretty fast. Would like to try the Ohio this weekend. Not reaaly sure where I can access some deep holes from shore tho? Dave

Congrats on the fish.... rough time of year to target from shore unless you know where the holes are at. Fish may get lethargic when it gets cold but just shows that stink  still works

Thanks FL2,Fishing the rivers in the winter can be real tough with not a lot of action. But you can't catch fish from the couch LOL I do know of quite a few deep stops from shore but a ton more with the boat. that is winterized so looks like the shore for now. OH YEAH THE STINKS WORKS LOL Going today for some more cats and some Carp gotta bust out the TOP WATER BREAD its awesome DAVE

Hope you did well!  Our boat is also put away for the season, I guess we could get it out if we expected an extended warm spell with a cooperative work schedule, but until that we are also content to fish from shore. When we go we usually target the areas just below the lock and dam systems if on the Allegheny.

big, you sure the one was a flathead?? Ive never caught or heard of one being caught during winter. They generally go into a state of near hibernation and quit feeding altogether. Though channels stay somewhat active in the deeper wintering holes.

Most "experts" whom ive read on the topic of flats through the years generally agree too on the flats going dormant, except maybe for the extreme southern US. If you're 100% positive it was a flathead, then Id say thats a pretty good rarity you caught there.

Yeah it was a flathead, he was in a pile of logs about twenty odd feet. A buddy and I caught a couple Flats last year in the same spot. I have read that they go dormant and was surprized last year when we got a few. We mostly get channel's tho. Never made it yesterday raining a bit to hard. Dave

Any idea of how deep the water is where you caught that channel cat pork?

Anyone catch cats on the Yough River in winter? There is a large deep hole (11 feet or better) behind my house and as soon as the ice opens enough to get the boat on I’d like to give it a try.
