Propane-Powered Jiffy Auger?
How many of you have checked out or heard about the new propane-powered ice auger from Jiffy? http://www.jiffyonice.com/EComStore/product/pro-4-model-40,3664,46.htm I've been wanting to get a power auger for the past few years and after my wife saw how much fun my son and I had with it last winter she's organizing a family group effort on one for me for Christmas. Basically they'll give me cash or prepaid credit cards and I can shop for what I want and kick in the rest. I'm thinking of going with this. Just wanted to get some feedback from some of the outdoor/fishing experts here. I don't know a real lot about augers but I thought the low maintenance aspect of having a 4 stroke and not having to mix gas and oil would be a real plus. THOUGHTS?

I guess whether I order online or go find it in person will be determined partially by price and partially by how long it will take to get it. I have a possible fishing trip planned for New Years Eve Day and another for January 3rd. It wouldn't be worth the $15 to wait I'm thinking.

I don't have any advice about the auger, but I know that FishUSA has the fastest shipping of anyone I've ever ordered from.

Too heavy ! I bought a Strike master Lazer pro mag. Much lighter. I believe FISH USA has them also. Less moving parts on a two stroke. Higher hp output also.

I myself do not own a power auger yet. However, within my reasearch and asking around, it seems that alot of folk are going for the electric augers. They don't have to carry gas and don't have gas leaking onto the ice etc. Not my 2 cents, just 2 cents that I've heard.

Is that sound normal for a propane auger? Sounds like the gearbox needs some lube.

Works great. Two guys can sit in there comfortably and it breaks the wind pretty well. If it gets colder I might kick on the propane heater I have for deer hunting.

Just my two cents. Picked up an attachment called the "Ice Kicker" a couple years ago, simple adapter allowing you to use your cordless drill. No noise, no smell, no spillage, can cut hole while inside your hut if you want. Can't speak for others but have easily punched twenty to forty holes in five to fifteen inches of ice with times of ten to maybe thirty/forty seconds per hole with my dewalt 18 volt on low setting. Not familiar with the propane model, could be better, I'm just very happy with the ice kicker setup.

I made a similar setup for use on a 18v drill. I just cut and drilled out some bar stock and turned it into a drill bit for my cordless. The only thing I added was a plate between the top of the bit and the auger. The plate is about 4 inches larger than the diameter of the auger blades and hole being drilled. So if the auger comes loose from the drill, you arent replacing a sunken auger. I will also add that I did purchase several more batteries for my drill as they do not last as long in cold weather.
