A 5wt is pretty much standard equipment for Penns, and the other creeks around here. I prefer an 8'6" most of the time, but a 9' does give a little extra reach over the different currents.

My advice would be to go with a moderate fast action. The light tippets we often use around here don't so much stand up to tip flex rods.

    What's your price range?

BP is clearancing their 270 rods and reels
    you can get a 3 piece 8'6" 4wt for $90 (normally $190)
and the reel for $90 (normally $190)

    makes a great combo
