Ice Report

Yesterday I traveled from Gloversville to Plattsburgh and back via Rt. 8 between Wells and the Northway and noticed that all the small ponds & shallow lakes were ice covered but the larger and deeper lakes were not.  The ice on the ponds did not look safe to walk on but I didn't get out for a closer look either.  It was dark when I returned and in the midst of a hard rain, so that may have been enough to take the ice back off.  At any rate, a good cold snap ought to do the trick in the Adirondacks, at least on the smaller water bodies.

Until you lose some of the weight you have put on I wouldn't venture out on the thin ice in the Adirondacks.
Wait until there is at least 6-8" in the middle of the lake and 8-10" around the shoreline.

It seems like were not getting any ice for a couple weeks here in the capital region. this has got to be the worst part of the year. I cant fish open or frozen water.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he has to buy a rod, a reel, line, sinkers, swivels, hooks, leaders, lures, crankbaits, live bait, soft plastics and bobbers.

a friend of mine has a pond that has 3 inches of good clear ice on it.  only has 3 inch rock bass though.  eagle you wouldnt happen to know if west lake is starting to freeze would you?  seems like its one of the first to start freezing in the area.

west lake has 6 inches of beautiful black ice.  there were people on canada, green, and caroga lakes too.  caught 4 perch today in 10 mins.  i was having issues with my shelter with no ice anchors and no gloves so i called it quits real early.

went to a friends pond today to do some culling.  hes got 10 inches of ice on it.  threw all rock bass under 4 inches on the ice for the birds.  took home a 2 gallon pail for trapping bait.  probably left about 4 gallons of fish on the ice.  i do this at least 2 times a year and it seems like it doesnt even phase the ponds population.

its officially ice fishing for me. every single day after school im heading out on my lake. some guys stole my spot which made me a little angry. Plus theyve got tons of tipups and a shanty, but oh well guess i gotta share. been experimenting with jigs and lipless cranks but the lakes not cooperating with me. anyone have an idea as to where the fish will be around now?

all depends on where your fishing and for what.  look for the 2 things fish want.  food and shelter.  maybe a rocky point or a weedbed.  on another note canadarago lake has people out on it.  ill be headed up thursday to try for some walleyes and big perch.
