Headed up Thursday afternoon and setting up the tent and spread in our usual spot along Salmon Creek. Friday morning hopefully kick up some grouse, followed by some holdover bows on the fly rod before dark. Saturday morning begins with a lovely hike up heartattack hill into bear country. Only staying til Sunday. Might hit up Cougar Bobs for some of the Steeler game before heading home. Good luck to all.

Used to camp along salmon creek, just above where little salmon enters big salmon. There was a big rock you could park your car on & walk down to the creek , Was some good times there! Good luck!!

Where abouts near Smethport?  I'm skipping the archery bear, but will be near the SGL just east of Smethport on Saturday.

Supposedly PGC investigating circumstances of the kill.  Nothing official yet, just loads of rumors.

I think they investigate all or most archery bear kills. Most of the ones you hear about being under investigation turn out to be not legal.
    Thats a huge bear though.

Many of the archery kills are followed up on.  Many times the hunters most show a officer where the bear was killed.

cant wait for Saturday this is my 9th bear season and i hope to bag another pa black bear..

But i would really like to see my dad get one this is his 29th bear season still looking to fill a bear tag he saw me shoot mine when i was 13 and i dont know who was more excited me or him when i dropped it on a dead run at 10 yards... this year my dad and i have scouted and found a new spot in tionesta that seems promising hope he can seal the deal. he is archery hunting now for them and has been sitting all day in the rain he is truly dedicated and one hell of hunter he has taught me everything there is about hunting and if anybody in our group of guys that hunt, he deserves a bear the most.

Took a bear in Maine a few years ago with the bow. NOT an 800 lb monster but a very acceptable bear. The bow was a very quick and effective kill ( heart shot). Would think that an investigation would have some sort of complaint involved, but there are always guys who "know" and will spread any kind of talk about someone elses good fortune. Even when they were miles away when it happened-they KNOW..
Had permits to hunt a farm in Ct years ago and when the locals luck started to run down they KNEW we were killing ALL the deer and told everyone they could find all about it. The sport shops , local range and local enforcement. They even knew exactly how many deer we had illegally killed. Fact of the matter was we had hunted that farm very little and had NEVER taken a deer there.

Blaze- hope your dad scores-its the hunting not the killing but now and then you gotta score

dpms you could tell them you killed it anywhere.MY cousin husband talked to a wco the other day in game lands 51.He told him that they can't make you take them to the exact spot. How would they know the exact spot you killed it you could killed it on one mountain and take and gut it out on another. The wco also told him that 9 out of 10 archery bear are baited.I guess they don't give bow hunters much credit. My bet is he used one of them amazing things called a trophy rock

WHY DO YOU THINK PGC,made a bear bow season? So they could bring out all the POACHERS,and make more $$$$,If they are baited, most are done by the locals. The bear is a Giant, but with 9 shots in it who's the lucky hunter,1st shot or the last, who tagged it?

If you were hunting the same area I KNOW that you would also be fined for hunting as there is no set distance you have to be away from bait know it or not. The PGC will not cut you no slack. I see a decrease in the amount of archery bear hunters to come simply because of cases like this one.

So let me get this right.  There are very few hunters and very few shots, but they are killing all of these cubs.  Interesting....

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

we went to Tidioute check in and they had a cub estimated at 33lbs. on saturday night. There was one estimated at 470 I believe. He looked pretty big in the truck. I couldn't bring myself to shoot a cub. I dont know if I could shoot a 100 or 125 they just dont look big enough, still look like babies. I estimated the one I seen at my cabin at 125 pounds but after going to the check station it was more like 200-250.

Well then that means that 90 of them were adults. So that doesn't seem like to bad of a ratio to me. The ratio of fawns killed to adult does is much higher and there are still plenty of deer around.

Lil G/270WB why is your glass always 1/2 empty?

In the area I hunted the numbers of hunters were up significantly, the number of shots I heard was less than other years I've hunted.

Will a cub live through the winter if it's mother is shot?
