Shoot before you buy. I shot a few this year and narrowed it down to a Z7 or Maxxix 31. I like the Hoyt Maxxis better. It's all what you like.

This is going to be next years bow. I haven't shot it yet, but if it is anything like the Maxxis I will be taking one home. http://www.hoyt.com/compound_bows/details/crx+32 This one won't meet the $700 budget though. You won't be walking out of a shop with it equipped for under $1100. I will be selling my Razortec sometime before next summer though

I bought my Maxxis 31 for $780. You can pick up a used one for a whole lot less. Take your time and look around.

I got the Matthews Z7 this year after shooting a couple different bows. Shoots real good at the target, kills real well on the doe I shot. Did miss a nice buck with it, think part of reason is did not practice enough from a tree, mostly just from the ground. Will be more ready next year. Remember to practice a lot as the new bow will feel much different at least it did to me since my old bow was new in 95.

IMO, buy what feels the best to you and ignore the name and the price. It is an investment for your hunting. Personally, even though it is a long term investment, I can't fathom spending a mortgage payment on a bow. Buy a year or two old top of the line bow and spend significantly less. Myself, I went with a Martin last year and really like it a lot. I shot a bunch last summer and there is no shock, it is quiet, and it pushes my hvy arrows close to 300 fps. My old bow was a Mathews FX. Most of the "new" bows these days are pretty comparable and the Martin line seems to give you a lot of bang for your buck.

ORIGINAL: Outdoor Adventures I bought my Maxxis 31 for $780. You can pick up a used one for a whole lot less. Take your time and look around. New? Equipped? I shot a bunch of bows last year with the intention of buying one and the Maxxis was my favorite of the bunch. This spring I am going to shoot the new crx(in addition to a bunch of others) and I have a feeling that will be the bow I walk out with. If you go new, which I am going to do, there isn't much wiggle room in the price department unless you get last years model or a discontinued bow.

Just curious, why a new bow so soon? Was that PSE you bought in 07 new or used? I know advances are made every year, but I am sure that bow can still do a number on a deer.

WOW, 1100 bucks for a bow. Just curious as to how long you think you'll use that particular bow? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night spending that much money to kill deer. I'm shooting a 13 year old Fred Bear Code and still killing deer every year. I'm actually thinking of a new bow this year or re-stringing this one. I haven't shopped a new bow in a long time,,,what are the odds of getting something decent for under $500? I hunt basicly everyday in bow season and plan to keep a new one just as long,,any suggestions?

catman, lol spend 1100, like you said if you keep it for 13 years..thats less then 100 dollars a year... think 15 years ago what a top of the line bow cost compaired to now i guess...rising costs anddd improved technology make it worth it in my book. well not the rising costs..the improved tech. is worth it. specially if you have an "old" bow not like an old bow of 5 years ago. you can get a fine bow for under 1100.. i dunno about 500 what you can get. im sure some combo package. if you chose to build one im assuming you can keep it around 600-900 its all up to you really and your budget. as far as upgrading bows every three years when nothing is wrong with the one you shoot..i wont be doing that. If its comfortable and you shoot it great. why change and have to learn something new all over again?

Smokey, I honestly don't like the bow at all.. I have 2 main beefs.. The first one is i can't shoot fixed blade broadheads. I have tried every which way to shoot them and every arrow will shoot different. I tune them all the exact same way, same arrow, same everything but then I will shoot one and another one will shoot totally different. I have tried many different fixed blades and still no luck.. I took it to Cabelas where i bought the bow and they couldn't even figure it out.. My other beef is i have never shot through a deer. I have killed around 5 deer with it or so but every deer i shoot the arrow has not gone through. I understand that there is lots of bone and things you can hit in there but the deer i had shot last year the arrow hit right through the heart and the arrow didn't go through very far. I upgraded this year and bought CE Terminators thinking maybe the arrow was the issue but had the same deal.. Arrow went throuhg maybe 5 innches and stuck out of the deer.. Maybe someone could help me out but, I can't figure out any reasons.. The bow is maxed at 60 lbs with an 75% letoff.. Thanks, Ed

I am not suprised that the folks at Cabelas couldn't help you. Most employees down there aren't very savvy with the goods that they are selling. If you are having trouble getting any fixed heads to group I would say it is likely an issue with your arrows. Did you try spin testing them? How about paper tuning? It is unlikely, but it also is possible if the bow is a dual cam that the timing with the cams is off. It is a good idea to mark each cam to see if they are "drifting" at all. As for the penetration, there a bunch of different scenarios that could affect it with point of impact on the deer being the most significant. Broadhead selection and shaft selection are obviously important as well. Regardless of your broadhead/arrow choice if your bow is not tuned properly and is not firing true arrows, you will never get the maximum penetration that the bow is capable of. Go back and make sure the bow is tuned properly by paper tuning.

Esox, the arrows i bought are CE Terminators, i bought them from Nelson's Arrows.. My dad has the arrows and liked them he constantly every year shoots clean through the deer and gets massive blood trails. I shoot the 2 blade 100 grain Rage. It's just a single cam bow that i have never messed with as far as making the draw length longer or anything of that nature. I never paper tuned the bow when i took it to Cabelas they did mess with it but said they didnt noticed anything. Only reason i took it there was because that is where i bought it.

Nelson's Arrows?? If you tried to get help there and you aren't one of the guys that spends a grand in her shop a year, forget it. You need to paper tune first. Could be numerous things like nock point, rest issues, arrow spine...all can be diagnosed through paper tuning and process of elimination. I had nothing but bad experiences with Dotty and her crew. My first recommendation would be to find a bow shop that is not hers'. MO
so save your breath I could not hear, I think I made it very clear...

Bear Attack... $750 if thats your price range thats what I'd be buying, I bought the Bear Assault this year for $550 but if I had the extra to spend I would have went with the Attack for a little extra speed, these are bow only prices. Shot a few hoyts and pse bows but for the extra money they wanted for them I couldn't justify it. The guy that got a Martin seems to like it, they seem to have a good value as well, but I have heard rumors thier advertised speeds are higher than you actually get, but I cant say. I have always been partial to Bear archery, but value wise I say they are tops... 342fps ibo for $750, who else can touch that?
