Brown Trout

A little info please on Brown Trout in the SR. I have caught some nice ones over the years by various means and all were probably caught by mistake. Got a nice 12 pounder mounted years ago. I think they are the nicest of all the fish in the river but I have never fully understood their cycle. When they enter and leave -how long they stay- when is their spawn and where do they generally go to spawn. --Thanks guys.
Most of my --years-- on the SR were 2 or 3 day trips once in early Oct and once in late April. Now that I have a place there I'm fishing a week or two a month and am starting the learning curve that some enjoyed early on.

ps. guess I need to know what they like to hit on as well.

to my knowledge you can get early spawning browns as early as mid november... these early spawners start coming in september. drop backs as late as february... you can then get them again as early as late april coming in behind small mouths... the lake is a hole other ball game. once the ice breaks in march on the lake (if it brakes in march) browns are hot in shallow water on the lake. remember though, some years tend to be better than others for browns... they are typically hard to figure out. i've even seen browns in the summer time that were lake run. i'm also interested to see if more browns start following the increase of atlantics...oswego on the other hand has many browns that congregate together in more concentrated amounts than the salmon... in my opinion for baits flies or tactics... blue or white egg sacs, beads, white estaz, glo bugs in varieties of colors... i find white, blue or orange seperately or combined in any basic fly, eggs, beeds or even maribou jigs works the best

Blue, green, and orange estaz eggs, as well as orange glo bugs took a few browns for us on the oak this past weekend.

Always done the best on browns w/ char ----also focus on the slower water.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

Try some under cut banks/cover. I have gotten some nice browns early and very few in the afternoon. I have noticed that they tend to hold real tight to cover. Hey you never know. Good luck man.

Thanks Jonny. I always fish like that for at least a little while on each outing. I  too believe trout are trout and like to try them just like little guys in a brook.
