Steelhead "terrible" to eat?

A friend just came back from a guided float trip on the Salmon R.  He caught a few old, black kings and a nice fresh steelhead.  The guide told him that steelhead were terrible to eat, and he should let it go, which he did.  My memory may be fading, since I haven't eaten any for about 20 years, but I don't think they were bad in any way.  I told him the guide was probably just trying to get him to release the fish so it would still be around.  Can't believe a steelhead would be any worse to eat than a black mudshark.

Thanks guys.  Pretty much what I remember.  Guess the guide thought it was a more persuasive approach than "we like to release the steelhead and maintain the fishery."

Mostly smoked the fish in my case, rather than fresh cooked.  I really liked to keep the bright silver fish, as it was so much easier to trim out the fat line that holds most of the harmful things the fish carry with them.
