Po Man Waddington Shanks

Anyone tie on Cotter pins? I've found that they make excellent shanks and actually sink a fly faster. Plus, you can pick up, basically, 4 to 1 vs the Wadd's.

I have tried cotter pins. Don't like them because the inside of the eye has a flat, somewhat sharp edge. Another option for shanks that I like is making them out of single strand stainless leader/spinner wire, size .035" or smaller. Wire is cheap and available just about anywhere lure making components are sold. Wire cutters, needle nose pliers are all that is needed to make the shanks.

I've just cut the bend off an large aberdeen hook to use as a shank.

I've found with cotter pins, if you use the same ring that attaches hooks to crankbaits, it completely eliminates those sharp edges AND adds to the movement of the fly. Although, the wire trick is noted. Good idea.

Are you referring to brass cotter pins used in the construction of muskie lures like suicks, reef hawgs, etc. or screw eyes? Lure screw eyes would work, probably well, because they are available up to about 2" long and heavy enough to add a significant amount of weight to the fly. Only problem with screw eyes I can see is tying material on over the threads, but they do have a nice round eye with no sharp edges.

I could be wrong, but I think he meant adding a split-ring to tie your tippet onto as opposed to tying right to the pin.

Now I'm intrigued about this. Only problem is I'll be paying 8 bucks shipping for $1.50 worth of straight spinner wires. Might have to wait until I find some at a Cabelas

Exactly. A split ring. I'll have to post up some cotter pin flies, eventually.

The end of the cotter pin is uneven. There is a little tab that sticks out. This holds perfectly in the vise.
