Dubbing Loops- Rhea and Ostrich

I know theres some righteous tyers on here, so maybe someone can help me out a bit. When spinning ostrich or Rhea barbs into a dubbing loop, how do you do it? When I do dubbing with rabbit I make the loop right off my tying thread, place the rabbit strip in the loop thats hanging under the fly, spin my loop etc. If I tried this with feather barbs they would just fall out of the loop into my lap. So do you make the loop seperate, lay it flat on a bench to get the barbs in? Any tips would be appreciated!

i stopped tying rhea in loops...
i will soak and split stems to palmer or just tie in fibers as needed
less is more... so 2 wraps of the natural spacing on the stem or the chosen tie in points are better IMO

    ostrich
i drop a loop of the fly with tying thread
apply some wax and hold the loop tight perpendicular to the plane of the fly
also give the loops a few twists before putting in the ostrich... this + the wax will keep the ostrich in the loop and out of your lap
you will see in the picture that the barbs on the ostrich will actually keep them in
use a bobbin to space out the ostrich

    also when dropping a loop...
instead of just tying the loop off the the shank of the fly, actually wrap the loop twice and then go back onto the shank
this will close the drop and the return of the loop thread... making everything tighter

    hard to explain...make sense?

Yep. Thats a gem too, I never thought of doing that, but I can see how much a difference it would make.
