report Oct 12, 13, 14

Just got back to CT. on Thurs nite and going back up tomorrow night. Another cast and blast coming up- Muzzel loader and Steel.
Hey Dime, man were you on the spot about the creek above the Hatchery-WOW- there are thousands of Salmon up there, they go all the way up too. Right on with the bottom being solid fish. Too bad they got there during the flood while the gate was still down. That flood apparently brought in the majority of this Octobers run of Kings. Short run this year because of that-too bad for a lot of guys with limited time.
Fished upper river under the most tremendous pressure I have ever seen. Lower river lots have very few cars. DSR only had about a dozen and a half cars on Thurs PM. There were very few Kings actually running. No boats at the mouth and no fishermen in the estuary.
The few fish were holding and trying to spawn but whenever they went to a bed they were spotted and surrounded. It was the same drill where ever I went. Slashing and standing directly in the beds.
The guy I took up got his first Salmon ever and it was great -he caught it the right way and we released it. It was the ONLY fish I saw released in three days-they were even keeping some of the very short Steel that were around.
Its at a cloudy 750 plus runoff with the fishermen standing in most of the flat water and seams. Right where they should be fishing if it wasnt slash slash slash.
Just the noodle from now on- Good luck guys

    Nice report RT.

Nice to see a guy enjoying his retirement....

I bet those fish in Beaverbrook just swam right over that little green fence. I've seen dead fish stuck between the grates before when their jumps came up short.

I don't think the hatchery was hurt much. My understanding is that their egg collection activites are complete and they got their full quota.

    Thanks Drake,
There are so many fish above the grate that when they all pass on it will look like a huge Beaver dam a hundred feet across-thats no joke. There are literally thousands of fish up there in that little stream. Its like Dime described last week. Its black from side to side and you cannot see the bottom. I couldnt believe so many fish can be in a stream without sucking all the o2 out of it and that goes on well past the road as far up as I walked. There is no comparison whatsoever to the many fish we are used to seeing below the grate by the entrance to the Hatchery.

You could just walk over and reach down and tail all you want.
Which reminds me- I only saw two fish in the river in three days wearing ornaments. Thats a testament to how many have gone up unmolested this year.

I fished the fly zones the last two weeks of Sept and first week of Oct.The first week of Oct I saw hundreds of Salmon swim by me as I stood ankle deep along the shore,it was constant all day, which makes me wonder what that stretch holds from the upper wire to the dam. They must be stacked in there.
You would think the hatchery people would herd those fish out of the stream down to the river,4 guys and one net would do the trick on that small stream. Then those fish can spread out in the "no fish" zone and spawn unmolested.

I've seen the hatchery gate wide open. i am 99.9 % that they open that gate when overloaded with salmon. i am 100% sure they open it for steelhead because i have seen it open myself. hey retired if you like what you saw wait til mid march to early april... i have seen the same amount of steelhead in that creek as there are salmon right now... now that is quite a sight... they stack right up to the dam...all of those fish will spawn naturally as they do every year, that is why they get up there and the hatchery allows them...i would venture to say that there is a high return rate with those par that hatch there as well...

Right on with natural spawn--just hope there is enough water in there when it gets warm again to keep the eggs wet.
