stocked bows on jigs

so a couple weeks ago i decided i wanted to start tying my own jigs for trout and steelhead so i gave it a shot and tied a few bucktails and a couple flashabous,

not the greatest but for my first time it was okay, but i didnt get a chance to try them out so tonight i went where some bows were stocked for fall and figured i would try them out before i took any to erie for steel this year and i was surprised when a trout took the jig, a feeling that i actually accomplished something and it worked was awesome, felt good to catch a fish on something that i made even if it was something as simple as a jig, but here are a few pics i took not the greatest quality but savin some money to get a good camera sometime soon for now just my moto droid camera

Nice. Looks like some big jigs they were smackin. Nothing like the feeling of catching a fish on your own creation.

Jigs are very underated/overlooked for trout. Stay with what works, but don't be afraid to experiment.

I catch 65-75% off my pellet heads in spring time on jigs I tie.
Sssshhhh ! don't let the secret out or everybody will use them, haha !
Nice jigs, I'd trim a little flashabou off, that one looked pretty long, but hey it worked, so you might not wanna listen to me , haha.....

In the fall with low and clear conditions, I downsize a bit but didn't catch any yesterday on jigs, all took minnows, eggs and waxies.

Just like everything else, everyone will have a different opinion on what is best. I catch trout & steelhead on 1/64oz. size even through the ice.I usualy fish them under a bobber with spinning equip. & have caught everthing from carp to musky with them.Size usualy depends on the color & speed of the water. My go to color is black, it seems that bass especialy like that color. sam

tie them heavy dude, and reel them super slow along bottom...once you feel dead weight on the line set the hook...all we used were jigs near neville island years ago and we used to catch eye's steady from evening until a little after dark

The moment of truth. Where all other things unconsciously melt away from our minds the instant a fish takes our fly. We stand there on the water with wide eyes, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope

Jigs (tied in all sorts of materials and sizes) work great in just about any water for a ton of species.  Nothing better than a good day on the water, catching the fish on your own creations.  I have used many on the rivers before, with a good bit of success.

Make sure you let your jigs dry out after using, before tossing in your box, or you'll end up with rust rings around the collars.  Those pieces of wool on a safety pin, that fly fishermen use works great.

Another tip that I learned from surf fishing in NJ that works in fresh water.  Tie on a teaser (streamer) in tandem with your jig (about 18"-24" up - more if you are using a longer rod).  This will appear as a smaller minnow being chased by your jig.  Some fish will attack it, out of a competition for food mentality.  Many streamers are easy to tie, some are basically a jig tied on an unweighted hook.  Google - striper teaser rig, for how to tie in tandem properly, although just tying into the line will work.

I use the cheapo fingernail polish (NYC Lights or something like that - 99 cents per jar - a ton of bright colors to chose from) to color the heads for the bigger jigs.  They need 3-4 coats, but much easier to use than powder coating.  A coat or two of white first, will make the colors brighter.  I'll even paint the hooks red to protect from rusting.

Congrats on the sucess.  That is a great outing for your first time out.  Confidence in just about any lure/bait will make you use it more.  The more it is used, the more likely fish will be caught!
