Catching all the steelhead

Hey guys and girls, my name is Greg and I know very little about steelhead fishing and cannot seem to have any luck. I have lived in Erie all my life and no one has really taught me. Is there anyone out here who is going to head out to the streams on Sept 30 that wouldnt mind me tagging along to try and get a feel for how to fish for them? I am out all the time but i dont know if im using the right flies or what. Any help is better than no help.

Thanks,
Greg

First step, what do you have for gear? As far as fly rods go, the general consensus here falls between a 6 and an 8 weigh. As far as rigging it, see the line forum thread just above this one.

As far as flies, the selected reading today is from the Book of Deetz:

"My favorites are buggers in black , olive and brown sizes 8 - 14 sucker spawn in pink , orange , cream , peach , and pale yellow 12 - 18  estaz egg  in orange , white , peach , chart. , and two tone orange and white sizes 12 - 16  And a good assortment of other bugs like nymphs and stone flys sizes 10 - 16"  St. Deetz 43:52

It is hard to go wrong with black or white buggers. If no one is able to have you tag along, go down to the mouth and watch what others do. Just watch. Then try. Then do.

If you are just starting out stick to Sucker Spawn and glo blugs in size 14-18

Once u get sick of those, you have educated yourself to find other patterns.
