oh brother..     I've watched guys successfully fish that way..  80% mouth area hook up..    I'm not a purist nor do I bash the ones who are.. I was just a general question..   I try to do the right thing up there.. I'm not chucking and ducking.  but i don't want to stand there all day with my thumb up my **** either..  I'm sure there a few estaz eggs stuck in a few backs and tails..  as I see decorated fish swiming by..

you will always have some chump on every site i guess i was hoping that this forum was going to be dif. but when it is open to all i guess the get the best and the worst try using a number 4 forged hook also stop by a drug store and pick up a bottle of anis oil put a drop or two on it the browns and steels seem to go for it a little better

Been a long time since I used sponge, can't remember what I used for a hook size.May I suggest you use the Jensen egg in chartruse instead with a size 10 egg hook heavy, enough weight about 3 ft from hook to tap the bottom on drift,14# main line, small barrel swivel,8# P-line floracarbon tippet 3'6" in length.Use that and you will catch the Salmon, just saying.

8 pound tippet?  I had kings breaking off 12-1/2 and even 15 pound tippet on Tuesday.....I had to resort to 20 pound tippet and finally didn't get broke off...8# is too light unless you're just going after cohos.

I agree with pafisher on this one, I also use jenson eggs when not swinging flies I use mustad hook#37132 in a size 10 extra strong, its more of a steelhead eggsack size hook but I prefer smaller to some of the gaff size hooks I see people use. And as far as tippet, never go higher than 15lb, and only down to eight when the water is real low and clear, I bounce back and forth but this year with the larger than normal fish i have been seeing pretty much 15lb florocarbon all the time. Good luck and say no to sponge.

Chartist - 8lb will work, unless you are trying to pull the fish in backwards...

I'm not implying that is what you do, but if you have a bit of patience and apply side pressure, 8lb will work just fine.

Besides, if you are using rope tippet, your chance of hooking up with a brown or steelie is greatly diminshed.

8 pound is fine, never a need to go above 12 for salmon.  It's nice to carry some 4 and 6 for browns/steel if they are around and you want to target them.

If I go above 10# I blow up rods, so 8# flouroflex Blue Label it is.

I never used a sponge, but I have seen guys fish & catch Salmons with it. Drifting fair too, while I swung flies just across the pool & didn't catch Jack ****.

Have I told you guys how much I hate the 1,2,3 rip peoples lately?

I use the 8# tippet because I want to have a shot at the Steel and Browns and if it's low and clear I go down to 6# in Salmon Season,4# tippet is my choice when the Salmon are done.Use side pressure as Drake said,it Knocks them off their run,and keep your hands on the cork!

i will add that i usually fish 10-12 for salmon. this year though, there were times i wish i had 15-18. although most say that's rope, 30+ bright silver fish in fast currents and high water... need not say anymore...
look at the salmon rivers of norway where they spey fish and swing or float dries for atlantics that average around 22 and up to 50+. they use 20+ for them... don't be ashamed to fish a heavier tippet. i will say though, the farther up you go, the lighter the tippet if you want maximum success. one example: i have browns and steelies agressively hit 12 lb. maxima in lower river. in the upper; good luck with 12 lb. for steelies unless you really know how to swing a big sparse fly... good luck
