How to clean a spinner reel

So I attempted kayaking for the first time the other day, and it took me all of ten minutes to end up in the lake with my rod at the bottom. Fortunately I was able to find it but due to the mud my reel is all gritty now. What is the best technique/things to use to fix this problem?
