Reconsider the size of gear

I failed to mention in my earlier reports, ( check THE RUN IS ON), the size of these fish that everyone is talking about. The size is not a lie or rumors. I caught and released a 33#er, quick weigh on a 50# scale, a male king. The other ones were 24#-26#'s. I'm using 15# test on a 1100 ugly stik and have bent that rod to the handle making the graphite make scary noises trying to slow these giants down. Even lost a coho that I thought was a big king until it jumped out of the water in the rapids leaving me in a pile of mono. So all the wows you've heard are true, and double check your gear. New line is a must. Good luck out there.

Sames rules that worked in the past will work this year:

    #1 - apply side pressure

    #2 - be patient

#3 - and for Cripe's sake, keep your hands on the cork !!!

Great reminder Drake.  I find that alternating from side to side throughout the fight helps too.  Just don't lift that rod straight up unless necessary.

hook is 100% correct. large and strong fish. very good points on ways to fight large fish. one point i will bring up is becareful with side pressure when fighting fish through broken or pocket water especially when running across river on an angle (either up or down). they tend to get your line right under a rock. good luck guys

Drakes #3 would prevent many broken rods if followed!

Most I didn't chase too far, didn't want to get tangled up in a bunch of other lines. There was more fish to try for instead of wearing myself out on a couple of logs with fins. I do switch to side pressure but only when I feel the fish starting to give up a little. With the base flow at what it is, I did get rock wrapped a few times. So you need to hold high in the trench's and the rapids, but once they get into the deeper stuff go sideways and wear on them.
