River Flyfishing

Question for the bigfish guys. In the coming weeks I'll be doing a little more fishing on the Allegheny. I know the paticular area has either muskie or pike in numbers as I saw charter boats blowin by last time.

My question....what would be considered a good inbetween size/type of fly to fish for toothies and river smallies. Something small enuff for bass, large enuff to attract monsters.

PS. I'm worse at tying than I am at flyfishing...so an easy tie would be helpful.

Thanks in advance....

Slick

New to the river myself, but I would think any large Wooly Buggers or Bunny Leeches should work.....

I would personally say 1/0 or 2/0.  The bass will hit the same things that those toothy critters hit. Look up some EP Fiber baitfish, amazingly simple tie with a huge outline and unlimited color combos.

Large streamers in brown/yellow, white/green and anything that can mimic a leech(bunny leech). Also try replacing the last foot of your line with 12# test mono, OR a very short steel leader. I usually don't go up to 1 but I have gone to 4 and 6. Strip retireve and let the fly fall between strips. You can make an (almost) weedless fly by tying in two pieces of 40# mono that ride down and just barely ahead of the hook tip. Post pictures!

The few times that I fly-fished the Allegheny I caught bass on wooly bugs and streamers in the fast water, also walleyes, any generic streamer, to name a few Mickey Finn, Muddler minnow, and there are also some good crayfish imitations.

    Thanks Duuds...

I tied up a few as best I could....maribou streamers is what I had material for. Tied on a 1/0 hook. I'm gonna try a few more of the above suggested before camp.

I don't know what riverfish like....but I managed my first pike on a fly tonight, on my new fly tied 20 mins before I left. Second cast...whacked a little one. Low 20's hammerhandle...but a giant to me. One more off the list!

    My "fly"

    He hammered it.

Great job! Nice fly and fish. Always nice to catch on your own tie and must have been a great feeling doing so entering new waters, so to speak.

Thanks for the all the input and kind words. I've caught a mess o pike in my life, plenty bigger than that guy....but this little one was more satisfying to me, being caught on my own terrible "fly", with little to no flyfishing skill.

I'm gonna try a few bunny leaches next week. They look pretty easy.

I've caught small mouth bass on various floats from Kinzua to below Franklin.

My best fly has been a Baby Smallmouth Bass Clouser. That is green, brown and white.

I'm trying to make an Erie run this week to bring "yinz" some sweet corn (think 20 dozen ought to cover it?), maybe we can get out and whack something. Did you get any more info on those Baer hooks?
